One of my conservative friends just posted on facebook one of those diatribes against having to "press 1 for English", screeching "When did this country stop being America?!", the obligatory flag waving in the background.
This is the response I posted:
When my ancestors first arrived on this continent, back in the 1600s, there were many beautiful languages being spoken here. Here in Colorado, those languages added Spanish and French long before English became the lingua franca. "Press 1 for English" is just a small reminder that I'm part of a historically diverse community, and keeping myself honest about that can only help in my efforts to be a better person.
Just because I really can't stand kneejerk xenophobia. . .

(1,074 posts)I've heard plenty of them say "press _ for Spanish," though.

(111,282 posts)with each tribe adding its own language to the mix. Our phone trees can get extensive, especially for outfits that provide services to some of the tribal people.
However, English is usually in the number one spot, so I can't see any reason to get bent out of shape over it.

(47,675 posts)Actually, to be fair, we're a multi-lingual country, but Spanish is our second language and people need to deal with it. My youngest daughter is 17 and fluent in Spanish. The "what language" part of the phone tree is the LEAST annoying part of Barbie the automated bimbo. "I'm sorry, I think you said 'fishnuts' and that's not one of our options. Let me repeat them again'."

Must depend on where you are.
Doesn't bother me at all, but I know it drives some people nuts. These are probably the same people who go to a foreign country and expect everyone to speak English.

I studied German in college and used it...somewhat sparingly...when visiting Switzerland in the 1980s. But I always lamented the lack of practice in everyday life in the USA. I've taken a couple of Spanish workshops to gain some degree of familiarity in my work (but not to the degree I could converse in it), but am thinking of enrolling in a Spanish language course that will be much more comprehensive.
If that happens, then I'll be pressing "2" for practice!
I spoke fluent French in high school and college because I took years and years and years of that language for my high school and college credit paths; however, I can no longer speak but a few sentences because I never get to practice! I can still read French fairly well, but am clumsy with the spoken word.
To top it off, my husband went to the language institute in the Army and spoke fluent French and Russian - now he's about like me - can still read it but can't really speak it anymore (he can understand some Russian when he hears it though - it's just the recalling of words to speak it that's difficult).

and German signs, and German schools and churches...
in Pennsylvania.
I don't have the link with me, but he blasted the German immigrants
for invading his colony (the Germans were invited by William Penn)
and he called them something akin to 'swarthy bastards..'
who should learn to speak English.
At one time there were more German speaking immigrants
in Pennsylvania than English speakers.
FRanklin, like many Quakers, detested the Germans,
and often 'purchased' their services thru indentured servitude
rather than using slaves.
Curious, eh?

(1,695 posts)And usually these days I just hear a voice say "Para Espanol....." then it kicks in to options in English. Why that should bother anyone is beyond me. I do have a pet peeve about call centers in India or other countries. It's the accent (and loss of American jobs) I'm a bit hard of hearing & I find myself not understanding heavy accents over the phone.
