(19,565 posts)It's not just here but on various Dem regions of the internet. Back in the day it meant Bush was a Resident of the WH but not a legitimate president. I'd guess with Russia being involved in Trump's election some feel the same way.

(205,467 posts)I had to get a new car this past week and I miss my Pontiac. I'm trying to get up to speed on all the bells and whistles that weren't available in 2004, but in the short term I'm still trying to figure out how to open the trunk!
I hope that all is well with you, too - and that the disruptors are finding better things to do...

(19,565 posts)I bond with my vehicle. Not as in we're family, but I like to keep them for years and years and we get to know each other over time.
A couple of months ago I finally had to part ways with my 2007 (a whipper snapper to my eyes) and embraced a 2018 model. The trunk is automatic per proximity of the fob and proper hand placement. As are the door locks. Which is nifty as heck, but there was a learning curve for me. Then there's the lane assist... I almost peed my pants the first time I was moving onto the shoulder w/o using my turn single to let a person around me, and, my car took over and put me back in my proper lane on its own.
The disruptors are as usual for recent terms. I had to put my kitty ( ) to sleep a month ago tomorrow, and kind of was hit or miss in there for a couple of weeks. The crew is amazing and picked up my slack.

(205,467 posts)And I hang on to my cars, as well, had a loan on my Pontiac and the lady at the bank asked me if I planned to keep it for the entire 5 years. That was in 2004...
At the time, I thought the remote trunk opener was pretty nifty - which is why it's frustrating that I can't open this one. I almost gave up and left my groceries in there overnight.
I still have my Pontiac, I'd get another one in a heartbeat, it's been one great car. I'd love to get it fixed, but we have rust issues here in NY. And I miss it, I knew the car and the car knew me. And that's not counting the memories, I still have my New Yorkers for Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker and my Want a Dog? Rescue One! that I got when I adopted my dog, Sara.
And I am so sorry about your kitty! I've been there, too, and it's the toughest decision ever. I still find myself second guessing decisions I've made though at the time I exhausted every option. I do understand.
I'm glad there's a good team this time around - I'm doing my part and alerting on spammers...

(19,565 posts)I got my Obama '08 sticker off my car, but it wouldn't stick again no matter what I tried. I had to glue it on a plaque. It's now hanging in my office.
I'm slightly jealous you still get to visit your old car. My car was squished by a gravel hauler, there was no hope of resurrection. It broke my heart, but not me, luckily. I took my insurance money and my new car savings account and bought this one. I came out better than I should have. Even if I didn't want to change it worked out. Still, I miss my old car. It never let me down and was exactly what I wanted. My new car and I may just not have had enough time to bond yet, though.
Thanks about my kitty, Boo. He got sick in May of last year, and was finally diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I did everything, all of it, they suggested for him. I keep wondering if I gave up too soon even still? Even though he only weighed 5lbs and wasn't eating proper, I still wonder if there was something else I could have tried. He was my little buddy, and we both lost our Tink (my other kitty) at the end of February this year. She was 22, and he (Boo) just made it to 14 by 5 weeks and 3 days when I took him in. Now I'm without a furry family member at all for the first time in my entire life. It's really quiet and lonely without them.

(205,467 posts)I've had others since, but that one had powerful stickiness! I even have a DU sticker - or what's left of one. We used to get stickers when we donated and whenever one got faded, I just stuck an new one on top of it.
And I don't know how I'd get the dog adoption sticker off - That one means the most since Sara used to go everywhere with me. I lost her in 2006.
The thing is, my car runs just fine - it's a Pontiac after all - but it wouldn't pass inspection this time because of the rust. I was warned, but I kept hoping. And they don't make Pontiacs anymore, just wish there was something, but I talked to a mechanic and he said it's major work even if I could find someone to do it. It's still a pretty cool car, at least I think so.
And I sure understand about Boo. I have also tried everything for a sick pet. When my previous cat got sick I was sent for a second opinion and I ended up with an amazing vet - who is particularly good with cats and uses both Eastern and Western medicine. And this was a pretty amazing cat - I adopted her when my uncle died and I could do anything with her. I remember when two vet techs were struggling to give another cat a shot - and on another table my cat was full of acupuncture needles - and she was asleep.
I also refused to give up, I figured if any cat could recover, it was this one. She also lost weight and I was feeding her by hand. But then the vet discovered what was going on, it was an inoperable brain tumor which had finally gotten large enough that he could see it. I lost her shortly before I joined DU. Her name was Rhiannon.
I currently have another cat - found him as a tiny kitten in a grocery store parking lot, took three of us to finally just catch him. I do think it was kismet since he's also black, long-haired, just like Rhiannon. But the personality is completely different. I just had to get up to see what he was destroying in the kitchen...
So I do know what you mean. And losing a beloved pet leaves such a big hole. I read once that losing a pet can be tougher than losing a person - because your pet is always with you. But you know that you were there when it counted. According to my vet, that's a pretty respectable age for a cat. And you also need to remember how fortunate both Boo and Tink were to have found you.

(19,565 posts)You're such a kind and empathetic heart. I didn't know about your namesake, but I'll always think of her when I see you from here forward. Rhiannon just took on new meaning for me.
I hear your words and I know you're right, but tomorrow is my one month and I'm maudlin. I'd just ignore me, honestly. I'm too busy tonight blaming myself and second guessing my choices to be sensible.
It's a darn shame I'm so far from you. Unless your frame of your Pontiac is involved I could help fix your rust problem. I've been doing restoration work on vintage vehicles as a hobby for decades. Really vintage 30's - 50's. I can't so the most major work, but a 2004 I bet we'd be able to patch up enough to pass inspection at least!

(205,467 posts)Since I've been here since DU.1, I answer to the name now, but she was my namesake. And, taking nothing from my beautiful but difficult Felix, she will always be the best cat I will ever know. She came when she was called and I could take her anywhere. I remember one time after her acupuncture appointment my friend who drove us stopped at Uno Pizza and I didn't want to wait in the car so I got out and took her with me. I would never do that with any other cat - but I knew I could do that with Rhiannon. If I had someone to drive us, I could forego the carrier.
And there was an older couple waiting outside for a table inside - with their disabled son in a wheelchair. His eyes lit up when he saw the cat - and he reached out to pet her. His parents said he had his own cat at home who he was very attached to and they were very pleased that I - and Rhiannon - didn't mind.
I certainly know where you're coming from. I got choked up just remembering. I adopt older animals so I've been through this before, but it never does get any easier.
And that where the rust is on my car - the frame. I knew I was running on borrowed time, but the dealership went out of their way whenever it needed anything. They've known me for awhile. I have the names of several body shops that the dealership where I got it (and my new car) suggested to me, but I went through the same thing with my 1971 Plymouth Duster that I inherited from my mother - they don't want to take the time, mainly do insurance work. But the car runs just fine, I drove it to the bank last Friday to get the certified check to pay for the new one. It's a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, silver, two door, and I know most people will think I'm silly - the new car is very nice - but I miss my Pontiac.
And that is just amazing that you restore cars! Wow! I absolutely love that! I do love older cars. We have a lot of vintage car shows around here so I see a lot of them, I usually stop and take pictures. I had my one and only *knock on wood* accident with the Duster when I first learned to drive back in the '80s. I was determined to get that car fixed too and a woman I worked with introduced me to a guy who worked out of his home and he did a beautiful job. But he passed away and I'm in NE NY so that car eventually failed inspection, too - due to rust.

(22,037 posts)This is a great book that I had to read in high school. It details each element of writing including grammar, punctuation, etc.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elements_of_Style
I doubt it's used in today's piss-poor schools.
My own usage is to capitalize the "P" in president when it precedes the individual's name, e.g., President Obama. When referring to the office without a name, it should be lower-case "p."
The other posters have already explained about pResident. Personally, I refer to the current officeholder as Trump. I won't dignify him with the title.
Incidentally, the White who edited Strunk's original book is E.B. White who wrote "Charlotte's Web" and "Stuart Little" among other works.
