Sessions Recalls Russian Proposal by Campaign Adviser, Source Says

Attorney General Jeff Sessions now remembers rejecting a proposal by a junior campaign aide who offered to use his "Russian contacts" to try to set up a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, a source familiar with Sessions' thinking tells NBC News.
The aide, George Papadapoulos, has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, and documents released Monday show he was in contact with Russians who offered him "dirt" on Hillary Clinton — including thousands of emails.

The meeting at which Papadapoulos floated the idea of Trump sitting down with Putin occurred March 31, and Sessions can be seen in a photo sitting at the head of the table. At the other end was Trump.
"The March 31 comments by this Papadopoulos person did not leave a lasting impression," said the person familiar with Sessions' views. "As far as Sessions seemed to be concerned, when he shut down this idea of Papadopoulos engaging with Russia, that was the end of it and he moved the meeting along to other issues."

Let’s pretend for the moment that this telling is accurate, and that then Senator Sessions recognized the legal and political risk of cozying up to Vladimir Putin (and not just another attempt to telegraph what someone has testified or plans to testify to the grand jury).
If that’s correct, that means Sessions has twice lied under oath about knowing about efforts to reach out to the Russians. And he did so knowing that the President was sort of cool with the idea.
That is, it would suggest Sessions’ lies, given under oath, were designed to protect the President.
