GOP tax bill would allow churches to endorse political candidatesBY BRETT SAMUELS - 11/02/17 01:07 PM EDT
The House Republican tax bill released Thursday would allow churches to endorse political candidates, rolling back a 1950s-era law that bars such activities.
The proposed change is listed at the end of the 429-page legislation.
It states that churches should not lose their tax-exempt status based on statements about political candidates made during the course of religious services.
The change to what is known as the Johnson Amendment has long been a priority of leaders on the religious right. They say the policy violates the First Amendment.
The Johnson Amendment prohibits 501(c)(3) nonprofits from engaging in certain political activities.

(7,939 posts)CFI urges you to contact your representative in the House today and tell them to reject any attempts to repeal or weaken the Johnson Amendment during tax reform. Use our action alert system to send your member of Congress a written message, and use the Capitol switchboard to share your views over the phone. All your need to do is call (202) 224-3121 with your zip code and press 2 at the prompt to be connected with your representative in the House.

People getting preached at and lectured from the pulpit regarding who they should cast their votes for.
Christianity and politics DON'T MIX !!
I will go into our woods nearby to pray and quit church if I hear one inkling of political persuasion from our pulpit. NO WAY!!
This madness needs to stop. And soon.

Did your relation find another 'temple' to worship in?
Sure, we got repubs in our community, but they are not brazen and spew their politics. It's anathema.
Our pulpit says NOTHING regarding politics. And if it did, I'm gone.

(20,252 posts)Besides the wrong doing in our present 'government', which turmoil is causing untold distress for many who have intellect, I feel there is a secondary conflict going on that is of 'faith' based.
R versus D
and
Christian 'rights' versus all other traditions of Christianity wherein some have the unholy nerve to support Democratic and Liberal ideology.
I see it around me and it's ugly.

This tax law will be a big step towards that goal.
