If not, and it's rum-soaked (or brandy-soaked) fruitcake, especially if it is made with dried fruits, rather than the candied kind, I'll have that.

It was something we all looked forward to, as kids.

I don't decorate trees, anymore, or even celebrate Christmas. I do, however, still enjoy a glass or two of Eggnog, with a healthy splash of Bourbon and lots of fresh grated nutmeg.

I always adjust the booze to our taste buds.

only major difference is joy of cooking whips egg whites at the very end and adds to the nog.
It thickens the nog

I wouldn't touch a fruitcake with a 10 foot poll, not after hearing that someone keep giving out a fruit cake given to him the previous Christmas and it was still good, and later it came back to him as a gift from other friends who were given the same cake.

or then there is this...

If the question is what do you prefer as a doorstop, then the answer is fruitcake.

I also posted above that I currently have homemade eggnog aging in the back of my fridge. I have never made it before and thought it would be fun to try.

But even if I could drink it, I would prefer fruit cake.

The commercially made doorstops some people call fruitcake are horrible and don't deserve the name.

Real homemade fruit cake is amazing.

Alton Brown's is close to my Great Aunt's, but she used figs and some molasses without dried blueberries and Rye instead of Brandy.

ETA - My family used Rye Whiskey for everything from treating sore teeth and fevers to softening a venison shoulder prior to roasting like a pot roast.

YAY Appalachia!

But I also enjoyed the straight-from-the-supermarket kind that my parents gave us kiddies way back when.

And I've had some pretty good fruitcake occasionally, too.

The NYT recipe uses bourbon and cognac and has a fluffy, almost meringue-like consistency. We "drink" it with a spoon. Delicious.
