Published 5:30 p.m. ET Nov. 8, 2017
Excerpts:
Sanders said he sees a role for himself in rebuilding the Democratic Party as an independent.
I think the first thing the Democratic Party's got to do is say to every independent in this country, We want you, come on into the party,' he said. As an independent, I think I can play a very positive role in telling other independents, You may disagree with Democrats on this and that, but come on in and fight it out and play a role in growing the Democratic Party.
During the interview with USA TODAY, he focused on the work of the DNCs Unity Reform Commission as key to the partys future. The commission, which includes Sanders and Clinton supporters and the DNC chairs appointees, is expected to vote next month on recommendations to increase voter participation in the presidential nominating process, involve new and unaffiliated voters and broaden the partys base.
Sanders has been calling for electoral reforms since the primary. He wants to limit the number of superdelegates, the party leaders and elected officials who can vote for the candidate of their choice at the convention and who overwhelmingly backed Clinton in 2016. Hes also calling for a more open primary process with same-day registration to encourage more voter participation.
Sanders is the first independent to hold a party leadership position since the modern leadership structure began. As chair of outreach for Senate Democrats, he has organized more than 170 rallies and visited 19 states for events that include rallies for the Affordable Care Act, according to his office. He says Democrats need to get out of Washington,D.C., more and focus on creating a 50-state party, backing good candidates in places like Iowa and Kansas, even if theyre going to lose.

(6,288 posts)Did he congratulate the great united organizing skills of the Dem Party, his old stompin ground, for their amazing wins last night?
Maybe I missed it.

(27,819 posts)... would be an "unprecedented disaster".
WOW! Talk about prescient, huh?
Everyone else was convinced that Trump - despite his constant lying, his stupidity, his ignorance of gov't and international affairs, his shady business dealings, his racism, his misogyny, etc. - would be a fantastic prez who would make America great again!
We should have listened to Bernie's prediction, because no one ever saw this disaster coming.

No one really believed him but they all clapped anyway.
Back on topic, thanks for your post.
Who is it that said "This is who he is". "I am worried for this country under Trump".

(11,175 posts)Often, when Bernie is subjected to nastiness on DU, it's because he supposedly did not speak out about something or other that he somehow had a moral obligation to address.
It's nice to know that, when he does speak out, he can also be sneered at.

(68,696 posts)Trump's election...I find Sen. Sanders is becoming more and more irrelevant to the Democratic Party and the party's efforts to stop Trump...although I am happy he votes with us in the Senate.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)given the number of posts that go out of their way to bash him.
Wait, you say "He is not a Democrat...."? Holy cow, I hadn't realized that before. Thanks for unearthing and highlighting this little-known fact.

(27,819 posts)... thanks to Bernie for highlighting the little-known fact that Trump would be a disaster?

(68,696 posts)increasingly clear we need to move on.

(27,819 posts)... that they were correct in their prediction that Trump's "presidency" would be a disaster as laughable - considering that literally millions of people foresaw the bleedin' obvious.

(68,696 posts)I predicted Trump would be a disaster too.

(11,175 posts)In this subthread he's being slammed for saying what was obvious, what everyone knew.
Of course, not everyone knew it. It's well known that some people on the left refused to vote for Hillary Clinton because, they said, both she and Trump were to their right (true) and that therefore it didn't matter which of them won (false). Right here on DU, you can find posts lamenting that, if everyone who voted for Stein had instead voted for Clinton, then Clinton would have become President (also true).
Unfortunately, some people who are disgusted with the Democratic Party are still downplaying the difference between the two parties. For my part, I have no problem with nuance, as in "The Democratic Party is imperfect but the Republicans are far worse." Not everyone sees that, though.
The people who make that mistake don't care one bit about the opinions of a bunch of Clinton voters posting on DU. (I voted for Clinton in November and they also don't care about my opinion.) Bernie has a lot of credibility with them, however. When he points out how bad Trump has been, he can get his comments into USA Today (as none of us can) and maybe change some minds.

(259 posts)Hes always got some damn advice for the Democrats while being the single biggest point of division among Democrats and probably by far the biggest reason she lost. IMO
Not every Democrat is a far left socialist or progressive purest. Thats why he lost by damn near 10 million votes in the primary. The vast majority of this country falls along the Center right/Center left/moderate.
Ironic how a progressive supposedly being open minded, was so close minded to other representations of Democratic aligned beliefs not 100% his own in various expressions of purity tests. Glad Virgina showed the importance of moderates in the party.
