A year later, Bernie Sanders calls Donald Trump's election an 'unprecedented disaster' for America

Published 5:30 p.m. ET Nov. 8, 2017

Excerpts:

Sanders said he sees a role for himself in rebuilding the Democratic Party — as an independent.

“I think the first thing the Democratic Party's got to do is say to every independent in this country, ‘We want you, come on into the party,' ” he said. “As an independent, I think I can play a very positive role in telling other independents, ‘You may disagree with Democrats on this and that, but come on in and fight it out and play a role in growing the Democratic Party.’ ”

During the interview with USA TODAY, he focused on the work of the DNC’s Unity Reform Commission as key to the party’s future. The commission, which includes Sanders and Clinton supporters and the DNC chair’s appointees, is expected to vote next month on recommendations to increase voter participation in the presidential nominating process, involve new and unaffiliated voters and broaden the party’s base.

Sanders has been calling for electoral reforms since the primary. He wants to limit the number of superdelegates, the party leaders and elected officials who can vote for the candidate of their choice at the convention and who overwhelmingly backed Clinton in 2016. He’s also calling for a more open primary process with same-day registration to encourage more voter participation.

Sanders is the first independent to hold a party leadership position since the modern leadership structure began. As chair of outreach for Senate Democrats, he has organized more than 170 rallies and visited 19 states for events that include rallies for the Affordable Care Act, according to his office. He says Democrats need to get out of Washington,D.C., more and focus on creating a 50-state party, backing good candidates in places like Iowa and Kansas, even if they’re going to lose.

While some Democrats are calling for Trump’s impeachment, Sanders said that kind of talk is “premature” and that investigations into whether his campaign colluded with Russia should play out first. But he said he was correct in predicting Trump’s presidency would be an “unprecedented disaster” for the country.

... would be an "unprecedented disaster".

WOW! Talk about prescient, huh?

Everyone else was convinced that Trump - despite his constant lying, his stupidity, his ignorance of gov't and international affairs, his shady business dealings, his racism, his misogyny, etc. - would be a fantastic prez who would make America great again!

We should have listened to Bernie's prediction, because no one ever saw this disaster coming.

Often, when Bernie is subjected to nastiness on DU, it's because he supposedly did not speak out about something or other that he somehow had a moral obligation to address.

It's nice to know that, when he does speak out, he can also be sneered at.

Trump's election...I find Sen. Sanders is becoming more and more irrelevant to the Democratic Party and the party's efforts to stop Trump...although I am happy he votes with us in the Senate.

In this subthread he's being slammed for saying what was obvious, what everyone knew.

Of course, not everyone knew it. It's well known that some people on the left refused to vote for Hillary Clinton because, they said, both she and Trump were to their right (true) and that therefore it didn't matter which of them won (false). Right here on DU, you can find posts lamenting that, if everyone who voted for Stein had instead voted for Clinton, then Clinton would have become President (also true).

Unfortunately, some people who are disgusted with the Democratic Party are still downplaying the difference between the two parties. For my part, I have no problem with nuance, as in "The Democratic Party is imperfect but the Republicans are far worse." Not everyone sees that, though.

The people who make that mistake don't care one bit about the opinions of a bunch of Clinton voters posting on DU. (I voted for Clinton in November and they also don't care about my opinion.) Bernie has a lot of credibility with them, however. When he points out how bad Trump has been, he can get his comments into USA Today (as none of us can) and maybe change some minds.

He’s always got some damn advice for the Democrats while being the single biggest point of division among Democrats and probably by far the biggest reason she lost. IMO

Not every Democrat is a far left socialist or progressive purest. That’s why he lost by damn near 10 million votes in the primary. The vast majority of this country falls along the Center right/Center left/moderate.

Ironic how a “progressive” supposedly being “open minded,” was so close minded to other representations of Democratic aligned beliefs not 100% his own in various expressions of purity tests. Glad Virgina showed the importance of moderates in the party.
