PA: Bucks County Democrats make historic gains and county and municipal levels.
Tuesday night started out much like past election nights at the Bucks County Republicans headquarters in Doylestown Borough. After the polls closed, party faithful arrived to an open bar and impressive buffet that included salads, pasta and a roast pig. At 9 p.m., volunteers began posting running totals for the row offices and updating them periodically throughout the evening.
At about 10:30 p.m., the updates stopped, and a look at the county Board of Elections unofficial results hinted that the night would end a little differently for the Bucks Republicans than past elections.
Still hopeful about her own races, county party Chairwoman Pat Poprik took to the podium to tell her fellow Republicans things werent going well nearby.
Republicans in Chester had been wiped out.
But just after 11 p.m., GOP candidates in Bucks were conceding nothing. If Democrats were sending a message to Harrisburg and Washington, Poprik said, the county party had an answer.
Were sending a message here in Bucks County that we dont like their message, Poprik said Tuesday night.
But, the voters would have the last word on the message of the night.
Democrats, who havent held a county row office in more than 30 years, flipped all but one seat. In January, Democrats will take the Bucks County sheriff, controller, prothonotary and recorder of deeds offices.
It will be the first time in more than 50 years that Democrats hold multiple county row offices.
