Carrier to lay off hundreds more workers - despite cash deal with Trump to save jobs

BRAD REED
09 NOV 2017 AT 08:01 ET

President Donald Trump last year struck a deal with the Carrier Corporation last year that was supposed to save American manufacturing jobs at the company and prevent it from moving them overseas.

Since then, however, Carrier has laid off hundreds of employees — and Fox News reports that the company is planning to lay off hundreds more workers early next year.

Specifically, Carrier says it plans to lay off 215 more workers this coming January, just months after it laid off more than 300 employees earlier this year. The deal that the company struck with Trump gave it $7 million to keep some jobs in the United States, although it still is moving many of the jobs at its Indiana plant down to Mexico anyway.

Although Carrier workers were initially jubilant about the deal to save their jobs, many have grown disillusioned as they’ve seen their colleagues laid off regardless of the incentives the company had to keep its production in the United States.

-snip- (a quote from a former employee, dated July 2017, Trump “blew smoke up our asses.”)

can negotiate like that! He alone can add good paying jobs to the .............Mexican workforce. People actually believed that jackass. Of course if you ask Trump, he'll tell you that he's added more jobs to the U.S. economy than the last 4 previous Presidents combined. He's an economic whirlwind. Just ask him!

That really sucks.

I mean, I know it was Comrade Casino, the republican Draft-Dodger-in-Chief, who lied to the workers at Carrier. But in general republicans are consistently lying to American workers. republicans need to stop lying.

If republican can't muster the honor to speak truth to American workers, then they should just STFU.

stand up and call him on his lies, it's all forgotten. Democrats and the media can report on Trump's abject failure to do anything about American companies outsourcing jobs, but his "base" won't believe a thing they hear. Until it happens to THEM! But Trump will always blame it on "obstructionist Democrats" - even though the GOP is in total control of Congress - and of course Trump's "secret weapon", 'blame it on Hillary' and the base falls right back in line.

And, would anyone like to wager on who Carrier will support and fund in the next election?

Trump, walking through the carrier plant, acting like a tough guy that just saved jobs. Yep, he was going to show those management folks they can't ship jobs out of the country - they had to deal with him! But like always, it was a big show and nothing more. Trump did not care in the least about the workers, he was just there for the TV coverage and once the lights were off he went on to his next con. Any CEO anywhere knows they can outsmart Trump, because in the end all he cares about is himself and his grifter family. And people voted for him? Now they can't admit they were conned.

Every manufacturing owner in the USA dreams of having nothing but robots in their plants. They'd be so happy to lay everybody off if they had enough specialized robots to do the job. If that's not possible their second dream is to build plants in 3rd world countries that are filled with cheap, disposable people who don't have unions and don't demand raises and benefits.

These are the 2 pipe dreams that drive American manufacturing today. Anybody who works in industry should know this and be ready to change fields when the layoffs get to your level. I'm retired now but I worked in printing for pretty much my whole career. The printing industry (mostly small local business owners) has been devastated by the 2 trends I've stated above.

It's going to get worse - way worse.
