My unpopular opinion: "Veterans Day" should not have replaced "Armistice Day"

I'll start out with making one thing very clear: "I AM NOT OPPOSED TO A HOLIDAY TO HONOR OUR ARMED FORCES VETERANS". It should have been established for a different day.

November 11 was originally a day "To be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'" When Congress amended the act in 1954, replacing "Armistice Day" with "Veterans Day", we lost a day that was dedicated to the cause of peace and remembrance of the victims of war - all the victims, not just military and not just Americans.

secretary of war, just like we used to. As if it's all about defense now! Bullshit. We should call it what it is.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to hear Trump say that, but for stupid reasons.

service" which I have heard and read several times today. I did not fight for their freedom. I fought to stay alive.

People who have not been in war have no concept of how evil we can become. So thanking me for what ever they have in mind as to what I did somehow doesn't ring authentic to me. That isn't the right word but I haven't got the right word.

I would bet that a vast majority of veterans who have served in actual combat would not be offended at all. And the vets who were fortunate enough to not have to serve in combat might really appreciate that their lives were not put at risk for corporate profits and also not be offended.

The vets who wore the uniform for the pomp and circumstance the way 45 wears the Presidency will be offended. F'em both - 45 and the faux patriots who love war more than peace.

cut down on criticism against anything that is military related. I think it's a sin the way some, mostly conservative, retired military officers expect the same reverence and unquestioning respect in their civilian roles that they experienced in the military. They use it in ways that favor their good buddies and family members at the expense of everyone else. And I think it's time for the military to see how this incongruity is creating hostile environments in our communities.

It's a poor reflection on the military. A poor reflection of what we expect from retired officers.

9. In my opinion, we should make Veteran's Day Election Day.

There is no greater tribute to our vets, and people will have the day off to vote.

We have two other holidays to honor veterans directly: Memorial Day and Independence Day.

He was not well pleased.

I would like to see a return to Armistice Day. And I would also like to see us, as a culture, be more about honoring firefighters, teachers, EMT's, nurses, and others whose work contributes to the well being of all. Warriors are occasionally needed, but we give them far too much attention for doing what they do.
