I've read that the process of "tarring and feathering" was not just done for humiliation purposes. Tar must be boiled to become a liquid. The recipient usually sustained massive burns over large portions of the head and body. The feathers, while providing a sense of ridicule, also provided more pain - if the feather-ee survived, peeling of the feathers with their sharp quills proved an irritant to skin that was already likely blistered and sloughing off.
