(35,362 posts)The lawsuits when the passengers of an autonomous vehicle see the vehicle about to do something sickening and fail to stop it. They'd be the passengers passively viewing the vehicle killing somebody, essentially on their behalf.
Or the first hacking, where autonomous vehicles run into a crowd. The hacking may be done in real time, it may be somebody with access to the "black box" that is the control and command center of the vehicle. Imagine the chaos if some terrorist manages to service a bunch of vehicles and implants commands to do something--just tracking down the guy who did the reprogramming, then finding all the vehicles. Rather nightmarish, the amount of chaos and fear the guy could sow.

(9,527 posts)Two researchers managed to hack a Jeep's internal systems first to kill the transmission and a year later to cause acceleration and to turn the steering wheel. Granted that wasn't online, but via plugging directly into the car's system. But given security only gets harder and exploits only get more common, it's not a matter of if, but when.

(50,566 posts)Considering there are people who, if they could, would drive your car into a bridge abutment at 90mph just for the lulz, the last fucking thing on the face of the earth that I want is a self-driving car.
