Papa John's apologizes for criticizing NFL anthem protests
By the associated press
Nov 15, 2017, 3:38 AM ET
Papa John's apologized Tuesday night for comments made by CEO John Schnatter blaming sluggish pizza sales on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.
The company is a major NFL sponsor and advertiser, and Schnatter said on an earnings call Nov. 1 that "NFL leadership has hurt Papa John's shareholders" and that the protests "should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago."
The company tweeted a statement offering to "work with the players and league to find a positive way forward."
"The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive," it said. "That definitely was not our intention.
"We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players' movement to create a new platform for change. We also believe, as Americans, we should honor our anthem. There is a way to do both."
The movement was started last year by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled to protest what he said was police mistreatment of blacks. More players began kneeling after President Donald Trump said at an Alabama rally last month that team owners should get rid of players who protest during the anthem.
Papa John's added that it is "open to ideas from all. Except neo-nazis." It has previously tried to distance itself from white supremacists who praised Schnatter's comments, saying it does not want those groups to buy its pizza.
The company's stock has fallen by nearly 13 percent since Schnatter's comments.

(49,047 posts)Kneeling is quietly pausing to mark the moment respectfully, but doing in a way that makes a point, respectfully.
Standing is quietly pausing to mark the moment respectfully, in the traditional way.
Other actions such as turning one's backside to the flag, sitting, texting, yawning, talking are all disrespectful. Kneeling is nothing like that.
Kneeling is associated with prayer, pause, meditation.

(4,341 posts)"THINK BEFORE YOU ACT", and that goes for thinking hard before you say anything.
One of the best habits I acquired was, whenever I was upset from an email someone had sent me, to write the response that reflected the way I felt at the moment (pissed) in regards to what the person had sent me, but instead of sending it I would let it sit for a while. Once my anger had subsided, which for me only takes a few minutes, I read what I had written and in horror I would edit it and instead send a very polite response, one that would make things clear and allow everyone involved to move forward without conflict.
Most republican politicians do not seem to practice thinking before shoving their feet in their mouths, I wish I could get $1.00 every time a republican has claimed that his comments were taken out of context, or they are sorry that people misinterpreted what they said because they obviously did not meant to offend anyone...Bull, I say!

(273 posts)The Ayn Rand-loving toolbag is still a complete toolbag and his pizza still sucks. His PR team wrote this bs apology and is totally meaningless. Dominoes had a similar problem years ago. Tom Monaghan was finally forced out by the shareholders and franchisees because he kept costing them money with his stupid mouth.

Curiously, I've talked to a number of Pizza Hut, Little Caesars and Domino managers and they say that business has picked up somewhat. Also, the small local shops are doing much better.
I'm sure it's a coincidence!

(1,035 posts)Lucky enough to be a NYer my whole life so I've never been to places like Dominos and Papa John's. I think I ate at a Pizza Hut once in my cross-country travels. That was enough.
If you are ever in Syracuse, stop by Twin Trees on Milton Avenue. It's the pizza of my childhood and I still try to get there once or twice a year. If you're ever in NYC, walk 5 blocks in any direction.

(101,390 posts)Oh, how could anyone have thought that? How could their intention have been that when they said the protests "should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago...the controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country"? Why, the multi-millionaire Schnatter was practically kneeling alongside Kaepernick, he was in such solidarity with him!

(82,849 posts)How paternalistic of Papa John's. It's okay if you uppity . . . players want to protest, just don't make me uncomfortable when you do it. Oh, it would be nice if I didn't have to see it or acknowledge it. Also, if your protest was in a way that was totally ineffectual, that would be great, too.

I say the same thing to them that I said to Chick-Fil-A: don't just apologize, make amends and then MAYBE I'll start using your product again (Or, at least I would for Chick-Fil-A, which actually does make a quality product. Papa John's Pizza sucks ass).

(37,374 posts)Here you are, you're just a person trying to run a business making and selling pizza. And you're up against all the usual stuff that small business people have to deal with.
And then along comes the front-man and adds a new layer of terror to your life. And it has nothing to do with pizza.

His nastiness about the peaceful protests is just the latest. We haven't supported him or his company for years because of who he is.
We also have boycotted DOMINO'S PIZZA since the 80's for two reasons. They put their driver's at risk for years with the 1/2 hour delivery promise (speeding, car wrecks, etc.), AND the owner pumps tons of money into anti-choice/anti-women causes, so he can go fuck himself too! And over the past 30 years we've eaten a LOT of pizza!
