Maybe Puerto Ricans will have the last laugh after President Donald Trumps disastrous response to Hurricane Maria: More than 156,000 Puerto Ricans have moved to Florida a key swing state in U.S. elections since the storm hit the island in September.
That little-known figure should make Republicans nervous. If Puerto Rican voters past behavior is any indication, most of the new arrivals will vote Democratic.
That little-known figure should make Republicans nervous. If Puerto Rican voters past behavior is any indication, most of the new arrivals will vote Democratic.
In the past three presidential elections, more than 75 percent of Puerto Ricans in Florida have voted for the Democrat, Amandi told me. Even if many of the recent arrivals returned to Puerto Rico once the islands economy gets on its feet, a significant surge in Puerto Rican voters in Florida would make a huge difference in future elections, he said.
Even 15,000 or 20,000 additional Puerto Rican voters in Florida could determine the next president of the United States, Amandi said.

They will probably figure out a way to kick them off the voter rolls. But, maybe not.

(7,178 posts)6. Also get help getting Food stamps (EBT) and kids enrolled in schools.
Sen. Nelson is trying to get so that they don't have to be in Florida 30 days before getting food stamps.

(4,533 posts)3. This means if Dem vote was 50% now it will be 51%
Thats roughly the net effect considering some dont vote, some vote Republican, and 100,000 more have booked flights scheduled to arrive this year.
And demographic changes have already been pushing Florida more Democratic, such as old white voters dying while younger nonwhites join the electorate. So all things being equal Dems should pick up 2% or so in 2020 compared to 2016. Thats a big change in a close state.
