(58,785 posts)Just schmooze him up a bit and then "compromat" as many times as needed. That personality evaluation! I'd love to see that one.
A bunch of "prominent" Americans visited Russia in that period, and wouldn't it be interesting to see the various FBI files on that? Also not so prominent, like my aunt. She found Russia fascinating but in pretty poor state overall. Not long after, the Soviet Union collapsed.
One of the prominents who visited Russia, in 1988, was, of course, Vermont Mayor Bernie Sanders. It goes without saying that he would have drawn their attention. Wonder if he lectured KGB agents on corruption? He was of course on his honeymoon, as well as part of his delegation visiting the Russian city that he and Burlington formed a sister-city connection with not long before. Sanders also formed sister-city relationships with cities in the West Bank and Nicaragua.

(18,964 posts)but this sounds like another one....
the thing that impresses me is Soviet Intelligence's patience...to cultivate agents as "moles" and wait years upon years for them to rise to positions that are useful to the Russia.
They did it to British Intelligence in the 50s and 60s...recruiting a student from Cambridge in the 30s and 40s who became a high ranking official in MI5 ...there is a statue of him in Moscow.
If this article is true...KGB hasn't changed their methods.
on edit: Here's the Wikipedia version of the British incident:
Harold Adrian Russell "Kim" Philby (1 January 1912 11 May 1988[1]) was a high-ranking member of British intelligence who worked as a double agent before defecting to the Soviet Union in 1963. He served as both an NKVD and KGB operative.[2]
In 1963, Philby was revealed to be a member of the spy ring now known as the Cambridge Five, the other members of which were Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt and, possibly, John Cairncross. Of the five, Philby is believed to have been most successful in providing secret information to the Soviet Union. His activities were moderated only by Joseph Stalin's fears that he was a triple agent providing Soviet intelligence to British authorities.[3] Philby was an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from 1946 to 1965, and he was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1965.

(47,551 posts)and long range thinking is rather astounding. That is what impressed me reading the article. Too often we underestimate their capabilities.
I saw a BBC series about the Cambridge Five not long ago - "Cambridge Spies". Fascinating story.

(1,587 posts)mention of the carefully crafted dotards visit. Much like the dog that did not bark.
They are real masters at this. Some of these stories are far better than fictional spy novels and sometimes less believable.

(20,002 posts)The Soviets were known for their long-term thinking with 5-year plans and all--as opposed to the short-term quarterly profit-seeking of the capitalists. So yeah, not too hard to believe that they easily read this Trump guy and his craving for flattery and did whatever they could to cultivate his political ambitions as a long-term project that would pay off big time someday.

(1,587 posts)said and his actions since winning the election, it seems early warnings that there were Russian assets in the Whitehouse by posters here may not have been hyperbole. Certainly the KGB/FSB would also have targeted Kushner, and possibly Miller. The great unknown is how successful were they?

(1,202 posts)it's how they roll, it's how they are, it's what they do. Not a big secret. I highly doubt they would have rolled out this aggressive campaign to help Trump win the Presidency,on a whim, on a moments notice. Putin has had training in this.
