Man who accidentally shot self, wife in church while discussing church shootings will keep permit

Man who accidentally shot self, wife in church while discussing church shootings will keep his carry permit
USA TODAY NETWORK Matt Lakin, Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel

TELLICO PLAINS, Tenn. — An 81-year-old man who accidentally shot his wife and himself at church while showing off his gun won't face charges or lose his carry permit, police said Friday.

Wayne Reid shot himself in the hand and his 80-year-old wife, Kathy, through the abdomen around 1 p.m. ET Thursday while showing off his Ruger pistol to a fellow parishioner at First United Methodist Church.

"As far as I know, he'll get to keep it," police Chief Russ Parks said of the firearm. "No one who was in the church is wishing to press charges, and we in the police department think they've suffered enough."

Tellico Plains is a community of fewer than 1,000 residents on the edge of the Smoky Mountains about 50 miles southwest of Knoxville, Tenn.

No, Chief Parks, they haven't. Old Wayne is long past the time when he's going to learn any new tricks, like the responsible handling of a firearm. Next time maybe he'll kill someone instead of just wounding two people? Will he have suffered enough then?

never to put your finger on the trigger unless you are going to shoot someone on purpose.

He will kill someone the next time. Or himself and solve the problem.

But I guess that doesn't keep them from being in that "well regulated militia" we hear about, with less and less frequency.

No accountability whatsoever.

I think it should be illegal to shoot someone, even if it was a negligent discharge.

You'd think that the officer's sympathy for the man who negligently caused bodily injury to himself and his wife might want to prevent them from suffering any more from further negligent shootings? Up is down, these days.

...let him keep on packing heat until he gets it right? “Yeah, he shot two people and they both lived, so we think he needs a second chance.”

You’d think they’d at least take the precious away until he got some more training (so he won’t shoot anyone else) but nooooo....

from a teabaggin', trump lovin', gun humper? When Reid actually kills someone because of his negligence, Chief Parks will exclaim in shock about how noone could have predicted that.

but sheriffs routinely let adults who's firearm negligence leads to toddlers or children killing themselves or others walk away without charges as well.

"they've suffered enough" is a nice sentiment, but others need to be protected from this person's incompetence.
