Lies, Incoherence and Rage on Tax Cuts

by
Paul Krugman

One thing you can count on in 21st-century U.S. politics is that Republicans will lie about taxes. They did it under George W. Bush, they did it under Barack Obama and they’re still doing it under Donald Trump.

Yet this time is different. It’s not just that the lies have gotten even more brazen. There’s now a combination of incoherence and rage that we, or at least I, haven’t seen before. These days, they can’t even seem to get their fake story straight — and they literally start yelling obscenities when someone tries to point out the facts.

G.O.P. lies about taxes generally involve two issues: who is hurt or helped by tax changes, and what these changes will do to the budget.

Thus, when George W. Bush cut taxes in 2001 and 2003, he and his party repeatedly insisted that the tax cuts were primarily for the middle class. In fact, while there were some middle-class tax breaks in the package, such as an increase in the child tax credit, these were dwarfed by cuts in tax rates on high incomes, reduced taxes on dividends and repeal of the estate tax. Over all, the richest 1 percent saw a much larger increase in after-tax income than middle-class families did.

There’s even more at work here.

The reason for the psychotic intensity is that the ideologues know this is the Tax Plan Two Step.

First, you drop the rates sharply on the corporations (corporations are people too...) and the extraordinarily wealthy.

Then that creates a funding crisis. Since the defense budget is a sacred cow that leaves “entitlements”: Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid.

This is the Holy Grail of libertarian/objectivism/Bicherism. They can see the promised land from here.

That is the goal—to turn the clock back to before the New Deal. That’s why they’re exploding at the slightest push back.

This should be spread far and wide on every platform.

The GOP might as well change their slogan to "We read (but didn't understand) Adam Smith, and also think Ayn Rand is the best."

Their long term goal is to destroy Social Security, Medicare, and other federal programs.

The only politically viable way to do that is to create Huge Budget Deficits then convince the public that these programs are no longer affordable.

It's easy to think the Rethugs are too stupid or willfully blind to realize that trickle down economics doesn't work and that huge tax cuts for wealthy individuals & corporations will cause huge budget deficits.

On the contrary, Huge Budget Deficits are the intended effect of their policies because Huge Budget Deficits are absolutely essential to their long term goal.

“We must elect a pederast so that we can take money from poor people and give it to billionaires”

It burns my ass to no end that our 1/3 has to smash its head in frustration while their 1/3 fights like their lives defend on it to let Rs fuck them/us and the "middle" 1/3 sits in a corner sucking its thumb.

WE have to suffer for their 1/3s pride and hate, and the softness of the middle 1/3 to push back against the right 1/3's petulance.

I was wrong about Orrin Hatch. I thought he was at least a somewhat reasonable man.

He isn't. He's either evil or senile.

Either he's willing to proudly, indignantly lie in order to enrich the wealthy at the expense of working folks. Or else he's no longer competent enough to fully understand the details of the legislation he is pushing.

8. How many large corporations pay taxes?

Most of the largest corporations pay no taxes. If you have a small business you still funnel tons of things through your business that you really use everyday in a non-business way. My accountant used to say, if you do not declare then you are committing fraud. If you declare everything and then write off everything and get caught that is a whoops, no fault. This whole giving corporate tax breaks is just a smoke screen. In the end it will have no effect on businesses. Now if they did what Bush did, be able to depreciate all purchases 100% over one year, THAT had a huge effect on business.
