https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/degrading-ritual-sarah-huckabee-sanders-pre-thanksgiving-press-briefing/ampOn Monday, during the last briefing before the Thanksgiving holiday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders treated the White House press pool the way a sadistic teenager would treat a group of third graders. The journalists, for the most part, went along with it.

It is the job of reporters to ask questions, and it is Sanderss job to answer them. That was why they were all gathered there: to do their jobs of asking and answering. Of course, this is merely a matter of convention; there is no law or rule to prevent Sanders from rejecting questions or from setting conditions for their asking. One might assume that the reporters in the room have the power, given that they serve as the informal representatives of the voting public. But this is not how this Administration interprets the relationship, and Sanders was reminding the press corps that she has the power to respond to their questions or not.
Anybody want to be first on what they are thankful for? Sanders asked. Her tone was menacing, the tone of a bully asking for a volunteer to be humiliated in front of the room. She called on April Ryan, of American Urban Radio Networks. Ryan was one of the few African-American reporters in the room, and her questions have clearly annoyed Sanders in the past. Ryan had tried, unsuccessfully, to ask a question during an earlier part of the briefing, when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson spoke about North Korea.
April, youve been sooo eager, Sanders said. There was laughter. There is always laughter when bullies mock their marks.
Im thankful for life, Ryan said, going along with the rule proposed by Sanders. Im thankful for my children. Im thankful for twenty years in this job. Im thankful to be able to talk to you and question you every single day. Ryan ended on a big, insincere smile.
That was the most bizarre press conference ever. There were a few who said they are Thankful for the 1st Amendment. That should have been everyone's answer

(9,670 posts)The media has in large part subverted its constitutional privilege and duty by attempting to treat anything from the White House as de facto presidential, when in fact they should have been pulling on the same threads that Rachel and Joy and Ari and Lawrence have been pulling on since day one. They are so damned afraid of being accused of a liberal bias that they are looking treason in the eye and averting their gaze.
Their role is irreplaceable and America is backsliding because of this dereliction of duty and honor. They've allowed the concept of "fake news" to undermine the actual reporting of news. They have no one but themselves to blame, but all of us will lose because of it.
Until the press corps boycotts this bullshit, I think one of our greatest allies has become an impediment.

(16,396 posts)On the other side of the coin, Theres been some great investigative work done by WaPo and the Times in the last year. Even the WSJ. And guys like Richard Engel have done some good stuff on TV.
But I agree as far as the WH press corps Im offended they went along with her kooky game.

(15,805 posts)was a humiliating experience for me as well. The public depends on the press to ask the questions we can't, to get the information we need, to tell us the truth. Sanders trashed the Constitution by squelching the inherent rights of the people to have a free and unrestricted press.
In complying with Sanders high-handed and dictatorial demands that the reporters had to first 'give thanks' before she would allow them to ask a question, those journalists also failed to do their jobs. This is the second time that these same reporters let themselves be bullied and browbeaten in the WH press room. The press corps also folded when Kelly recently spoke at a press briefing and declared that he would only allow questions from reporters who knew a Gold Star family. There are a lot of experienced, dedicated journalists in that briefing room, but they forgot they are the First Amendment.
The new rule is now established. What degrading ritual will the next imperial Trump toady demand of the Fourth Estate?

(12,448 posts)Sanders is getting creepier and more bullying the longer she hangs around the toxic orangutan masquerading as president of the U.S.

(2,419 posts)that your days in your job are numbered and that I will have the chance to see you officiate at the press conference when you have to answer questions about the impeachment or resignation of your despicable boss.

(431 posts)I saw the video on twitter. It was so weird and cringe worthy. I swear Sanders enjoys lying and being an asshole to reporters. I so hope she gets indicted.

(31,112 posts)your middle school PTA, let alone the most powerful office in the world.
The entire administration and all appointments are intentionally the least qualified, least intelligent people in our country.
Or if they have any brains, like Tillerson, they are then the most corrupt as he is.
Welcome.
