Trump and Putin Devastated As Facebook Announces Tool To Allow People To See If They Liked Russian Content
In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called Facebooks announcement a positive step, During our open hearing with Facebook, Twitter and Google earlier this month, we asked them to notify their users if they had been targeted by or seen content as part of the Russian active measures campaign. The move by Facebook to allow users to see if they liked or followed pages created by the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency is a very positive step. We look forward to additional steps by the companies to improve transparency concerning Russian abuse of their platforms, and urge them to furnish a joint report on how Russia used these platforms to sow discord and influence the election.
One of the best ways to combat foreign interference in US elections is for social media companies not to allow their platforms to be hijacked in this manner. The second step in combatting foreign interference in US elections is for people to be able to check the source of what they are reading. Facebook is about to make it a lot easier to clear the Russia propaganda out of their newsfeed.

(19,066 posts)They targeted very specific voters in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and several other swing states. They worked.
These measures by Facebook are too little too late, but still welcome.
Here's the problem. we are reacting not being proactive. In 2018, the Russian influence will be greater and it will manifest itself in ways we aren't ready for.

(63,215 posts)The voter who is so easily swayed by an anti-Clinton meme was an unlikely Clinton voter in the first place.
I'd like a firm census of voters who verifiably switched from Clinton to some other candidate--or to a non-vote--because of some bogus story that they saw on social media.
It seems more likely to me that this Facebook flap, though likely true as described, is more importantly a smokescreen to hide the fact that the 2016 election was stolen through direct fraud and vote-tampering, rather than by attempting to influence uncertain voters.
As for your concerns about 2018, I have stated for months that the GOP is taking no action against Trump because they have already stolen 2018 (and probably 2020), so they risk nothing in allowing him to run roughshod over the Constitution and our foreign policy.

Overall, weak water from Facebook.
I can see them not wanting to alienate the Kremlin, which is apparently one of Suckerburg's main revenue streams.
