Officials in nearly a dozen states are preparing to notify families that a crucial health insurance program for low-income children is running out of money for the first time since its creation two decades ago, putting coverage for many at risk by the end of the year, the Washington Post reports.
Congress missed a Sept. 30 deadline to extend funding for CHIP, as the Childrens Health Insurance Program is known. Nearly 9 million youngsters and 370,000 pregnant women nationwide receive care because of it.
Many states have enough money to keep their individual programs afloat for at least a few months, but five could run out in late December if lawmakers do not act. Others will start to exhaust resources the following month.

(16,936 posts)Yeah, that's right - Make America F*cked Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS is what we, the ones that used to be the GREATEST NATION ON THE EARTH, have become?
"Suffer the little children to come unto me" - and I'll send them off to play on the streets, maybe get something to eat sometime in the next day or two, and who knows, if they don't get sick, they'll be OK!"
ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS: That "suffer the little children to come unto me" thingie up there - it came from the Bible - you know, the thing you Repugs "claim" to live by - but continue to use as kindling for lighting up your coal fire.

(24,024 posts)...that has pretty much every socioeconomic level in it. We have families with live-in nannies where the moms get 2 carat diamond earrings for their "push presents" and families on all of the various low-income assistance insurance programs.
I live in Illinois, with an asshole "successful businessman" governor who refused to pass a state budget for 2 years. The state legislature finally managed to override his veto in July. Not optimistic about the effect this will have on our families who are struggling financially.

(29,674 posts)My child qualified after her father's death. It's been better insurance than anything I ever had her on.
My premiums at work keep rising. If this happens I don't know if I can afford to insure both of us. I'll have to look for private for her and drop my coverage.
