This tax bill making its way through Congress is so far below the basest norms of legislative conduct that to call it an unprecedented abomination would be too generous. I am no longer shocked by the depths and depravity of the cynicism of those wielding power in Washington who claim to be on the side of the middle class but are doing the bidding of the precious sliver of society who consider flying anything but their private jets hardship duty (a spirit that extends to many currently serving the Executive branch).
But what I am shocked by is that there hasn't been more of a groundswell of opposition. There are no shortage of respected economists who are pointing out the cliff we may be speeding towards. This bill is so cobbled together - away from scrutiny and open hearings - that no one really can decipher what it will ultimately entail. But what we have been able to tease out is cause for great alarm. I just read an editorial in the Houston Chronicle decrying the tax bill. And there has been fine reporting on this issue from around the nation. The polling suggests the American public takes a very dim view of this approach to taxes And many political observers feel passage of the bill could help spell doom for vulnerable Republicans in 2018.
Nevertheless, this tax effort stands a real chance at becoming law. And by almost all independent measures, it will then wreak havoc. Perhaps as Americans returns from holiday mode and focus on the news once more, the pressure will mount as it did on healthcare. But precious few days remain, as the bill is rushed through Congress to give President Trump what many are calling a "win" no matter the damage it will do to the nation. There is also a looming government shutdown and that unpredictable Senate race in Alabama.
Busy times, but not too busy that the American public can afford to lose focus.

(39,314 posts)I'll admit to being slow on finding that - mostly I see the Aarp campaign and the previous campaign for the House. Right there we can see that the Resistance is a soggy on this one.

Call all of them. I get addresses from each state through listings for home sales on Zillow. This way the phone staffers believe you are a voting constituent and they NEVER check. I have called both houses over 400 times in the past year and it works. Tell a personal story. Your phone number area code doesn't need to be local due to cell phones. Check out this link and share it. THANKS! RESIST!

UNBELIEVABLE given the horrendous damage the Trump Tax Scam will do to LITERALLY EVERYBODY in this country EXCEPT billionaires and the horrendous damage it will do to our entire economy.
THESE REPRESENTATIVES HEAR FROM THEIR BILLIONAIRE DONORS AND CORPRAT LOBBYISTS ALL DAY EVERY DAY. But they never hear from THE REST OF US. As you might imagine, this is a BAD thing. https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029887944
CALL.
EVERY. DAY.
Why oh WHY do Americans sit back and LET BILLIONAIRES TAKE OVER OUR GOVERNMENT? This happened because WE. LET. IT. HAPPEN.
You can bet your sweet ass everybody in the US House and Senate hears from billionaire donors and corprat lobbyists CONSTANTLY on taxes and other issues. But they get only a few hundred or maybe only a few thousand calls from Americans most hurt by Trump's goddamned tax scam.
THEY NEED TO HEAR FROM MILLIONS OF US. Their phones and email boxes should be SLAMMED FULL of messages and calls asking OUR representatives to OPPOSE Trump/GOP Tax Scam.
And they need to be SLAMMED. EVERY. DAY.
We cannot let up. Not for ONE day. Because sure as Hell the Kochs and Mercers and Adelsons and Bank of America and Exxon Mobil and Big Pharma and Big Insurance and Wall St and corprat AmeriKKKa and their goddamned lobbyists and lawyers (some of whom are now RUNNING GOVERNMENT AGENCIES which are SUPPOSED to be regulating them) are NOT LETTING UP. Not for a millisecond. And we can't either.
ALL WE HAVE is our collectively LOUD AND CONSTANT voices day in and day out OPPOSING and RESISTING Trump and the GOP's goddamned destruction and robber baronism - robbing this country blind and stealing every cent of money in the country to hoard all for themselves leaving the rest of us with nothing.
