https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wounded_Knee_MassacreBy the time it was over, at least 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota Sioux had been killed and 51 wounded (4 men, 47 women and children, some of whom died later); some estimates placed the number of dead at 300. Twenty-five troopers also died, and 39 were wounded (6 of the wounded would later die).[4] It is believed that many were the victims of friendly fire, as the shooting took place at close range in chaotic conditions. At least twenty troopers were awarded the coveted Medal of Honor[5]

(10,003 posts)A lot of it is comitted by poorly trained cops, nat'l guardsmen, and "security" who get their hands on heavy weapons without competent supervision/command.
The 1st Columbine massacre was a shining example, and there are many others.

In Aurora it was lone wolf.
Unless we are conceding that his access to his chosen means of slaughter is policy at both state and national level?
If we concede that...
Then I guess the outrage should merge completely as between the two.

But empowering the individual with the technological capacity for deadly violence?
Oh jesus christ. That's utterly lacking in protection of the public.
You think the United Nations is going to come down on James Eagen Holmes or Colorado?
For crimes against humanity?
Hell no, they know what insane gun lovers the American People are. Unfortunately, so do our elected officials.

Is the point that we are paying more attention to a modern shooting spree than this massacre that happened over 120 years ago? Because, speaking as a history professor, don't be shocked that current events outdraw history, pretty common.
If you're trying to call the Massacre at Wounded Knee the worst mass shooting in US history, as someone pointed out it isn't even in the running - check out any of the major (and many of the minor) Civil War battles.
Just posting because you're tired of reading about the theater shooting? Then maybe take a break from the net.

Drama much? Maybe, just maybe it's in response to the hectic ALET! OMFG! ALET!! banners plastered on the lamestream media's programs all trying to outdo each other.

(9,350 posts)When news reports began saying this latest incident was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history I was a little surprised. I did not have any other incident, but the number seemed small to be the worst in U.S. history. Later, I figured it was because 71 people had been shot. However, some news reports stated that it was the worst mass shooting since Virginia Tech.
In the case of your event it might not have been mentioned because it happened so long ago. It has been more than 100 years since that shooting. Reporters and anchors might not have wanted to go back so far into U.S. history.
Another problem might have been a lack of fact checking. One news report might might have said one thing and then just about everyone followed without checking to see if the statement was accurate.
