I guess it's because New Year's Day falls on Sunday and tomorrow is celebrated as the holiday for many people.

I think we need to change that just because it's so pathetically lame, but I know we wont.

It kind of looks like the smiley working a joystick, or working Jesus' circumcised penis.

The New Year starts with the first day of the lengthening sun. At least that's how I celebrate it. Never had much use for popes or their calendars.

October 31. I'm always pleased when the rare person out trick or treating says "Happy New Year" instead of "Happy Halloween."

...the parade is moved to the 2nd, as it would disrupt people getting to their various religious services at the many churches or whatever in Pasadena. Several are right on the parade route.

The parade disrupts the ability to move around town drastically, with many streets blocked, crowds of people and traffic, not to mention the influx of tourists and their RVs.

I tend not to venture into the overall mess if at all possible.

On edit: See post #7.

should be the Cotton, Rose and Orange bowl games like it used to be.

Like I care if Eastern Oregon State beats Vasser in The Chico's Bail bonds Bowl! Some of those early bowl games are idiotic.

This year, the Rose Parade ( which is often referred to as the "Rose Bowl Parade" ) and Rose Bowl Game will take place on Monday, January 2 according to the Tournament of Roses’ “Never on a Sunday” tradition. In 1893, officials decided it would be best to avoid interfering with Sunday worship services and decided to move events to January 2nd whenever January 1st fell on a Sunday. The last time the “Never on a Sunday” policy was in effect was in 2006.

Whenever a New Years Day falls on a Sunday it's pushed back a day to avoid conflicting with pro football.

It's a federal holiday. Something about the NFL having a lock on televised football on Sundays?
