So I walked into my local Target store and the place was full of cops.

My first thought was that this was the aftermath of a big incident, like a shooting, and I almost turned around and walked out. But everyone seemed very calm and happy - so I asked one of the officers what was going on.

Turns out there is a county program called "Shop With a Cop":

Shop With A Cop - Dane County, Inc. strives to create a positive interaction between law enforcement and the community by helping economically disadvantaged children shop for gifts for their families during the holiday season. Shop With A Cop - Dane County, Inc, is a 501(c)(3), non-profit agency. http://www.shopwithacopdanecounty.org/

So there were children paired up with police officers to shop for $150 worth of Christmas presents for their families. As I did my shopping I saw the pairs all over the store - picking out gifts, talking, having fun. They got their pictures taken together.

I don't know who thought of this, but what an awesome idea for building trust with the police. Apparently its happening around the country.

They should of course have community outreach. I'd start by not training the police to kill people with little or no justification. And then go scot free.....

Fix that image issue & we'll see some meat on the bone of community outreach.

It is systemic so lets not let a show of good deeds-staged & photographed-change the facts of how they do the job they were assigned.

And I've donated thousands in toys when I could. And a lot of it to a local PD drive. I don't regret that but I'll stick to local programs. The police use this as propaganda.

I listened to yesterday. It explains how the TERRIBLE wording in the Supreme Court Decision Graham vs. Conner is resulting in acquittals of police in cases where police shoot and kill an unarmed man. Juries are acquitting because of the instruction from this case.

http://www.wnyc.org/story/mr-graham-and-reasonable-man/

I have no idea how this gets fixed, except by another Supreme Court case.

Community outreach is a positive thing. I'm not sure it will prevent police violence, maybe it helps. But the fact that police don't face consequences for killing unarmed men, primarily black men, and get off scot-free seems to be explained by this case.

than the other way around. It's cops who don't see the humanity in many citizens, including children.

I thought there was a big bust up or a big wreck.

Since I was parked, I decided to walk over and watch the carnage up close.

It turns out the local precinct was having a Halloween carnival in a parking lot.

Twice in the past couple years I've seen where they have left lights and sirens on for an hour,
for no apparent reason after arriving at a non-violent scene.

Once they had a witness to a non-injury car accident locked in the back seat,
with the siren atop the car wailing away. That was on the news.

From my vantage point, it looked like they were on the street.

This was a county constable/JOP office. It doesn't have night hours because the area is served by city police officers.

I was the one, who was hoping to see a "train-wreck", instead I saw a kiddie-carnival.

In my solid blue town, there used to be a rule that if you were a cop in the city, you had to live here.
