How confronting Democrats now could position Gillibrand to take on Trump in 2020

So zis is zee plan

http://www.cnn.com/2017/12/07/politics/kirsten-gillibrand-2020-sexual-assault/index.html

Washington (CNN)When Democrats have faced uncomfortable questions about their own bad actors, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has now twice answered first.

The New York senator's Facebook post Wednesday calling on Democratic Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota to resign in the wake of sexual assault allegations led to dozens more party leaders issuing the same call within hours.
It came weeks after she'd made headlines when asked about Bill Clinton's sexual misconduct. Gillibrand said that -- if that misconduct happened today -- she'd want Clinton to resign the presidency.

Widely seen as a prospect for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, Gillibrand's moves against leading figures in her own party have positioned her to turn her focus to Republicans and make an aggressive case against Trump.

Which disappointed me because I like her a lot.

So 38 Senators called for his ouster. That means that only 10 Democrats didn't. One of them is Franken himself, so that number drops to 9. 3 of them are on the Senate Ethics committee, and couldn't discuss it, so that number drops to 6. And Klobuchar is his fellow Senator from Minnesota, so her circumstances are different. And she was pretty half-hearted, as pointed out below. So I am dropping the number to 5.

Here are the five Senators who really did the right thing: Richard Blumenthal, Tim Kaine, Joe Manchin, Chris Van Hollen and Mark Warner.

I look forward to Chris Van Hollen being chosen as Senate Majority leader in 2028.

And while I'm really disappointed in her over her stance on Al Franken, her criticism of President Clinton totally baffles me. She was a complete newcomer when she ran for Congress back in 2006 - in a district (NY-20) that hadn't had Democratic representation maybe ever. But President Clinton came to the district to campaign for her and it had to have made a difference. There was SRO at the rally they held - in a traditionally Republican area. The crowd loved him - and she won. I was there.

Since this was in 2006, it took place well after he was in office. I remember reading in the paper that the incumbent Republican "could have the job for life," if he wanted it. 83. Gillibrand Hurt Her Chances to Successfully Run for President
Sat Dec 9, 2017, 01:10 PM
Dec 2017

Gillibrand is an active crusader for women's safety. I have no doubt she cares deeply about victims of sexual assault and has worked hard in the uphill battle for better outcomes for victims. However, I also believe going after Franken was a poor choice with evidence showing this was a setup by dirty tricksters. This will make her judgment come into question and would be an issue in any future presidential runs.

Joining the Republicans in continuing to re-litigate Bill Clinton's cheating is also a losing argument. Yes, he cheated on his wife and yes, that was wrong. Republicans spending over $70 million of taxpayer dollars to impeach him was even more wrong. I am not in any way advocating infidelity. However, if everyone in Washington who has cheated had to resign, how many men and women would actually be left in office? There's such a thing as going too far. Republicans have made it their business to routinely go too far. Democrats should do better.
