No Good Outcomes for Republicans In Alabama

December 9, 2017 at 1:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard

Dan Balz: “For Republicans, there likely can be no truly good outcome. If Moore wins, the party will have preserved the seat but will be saddled with a new senator under a cloud of allegations, including assaulting a teenager many years ago as well as a pattern of pursuing teenagers half his age when he was in his 30s. If he wins and is sworn in, he probably will face an ethics investigation that will keep the controversy alive until his fate is resolved and perhaps much longer than that. For the Republicans, it’s a hot mess.”

“If Moore loses, the GOP would be spared his presence in the Senate. But the result will have inflamed the anti-establishment forces led by former White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon, deepening antagonisms that continue to roil the party… Additionally, a Jones victory would put the Republican majority at greater risk in 2018.”

1. I get your point, but what if Moore wins and the GOP accepts him in the Senate.

They would ignore all the accusations, dodge questions, no ethics committee.

4. I don't think they plan to have an ethics investigation for him.

What he is accused of happened long before he run for Senate. Their normal practice is to investigate something that happened while in office.

The Republicans don't give a flying fuck about "ethics", so who's going to hold them accountable? The press? Laugh along with me.

Why would they change? I think Balz is suffering from wishful thinking.

8. I think he and the gop knows he can win but is still toast

To me, it's telling that the gop withdrew support last month but are now back on board. In the current climate, why get back on board just to save that seat? My uninformed guess is that because these allegations came so close to the special election, it put them in an impossible situation, because of rules, they can't get someone else on the rep ticket. That being a dirty trick in their minds, hatched their own dirty trick, and made a deal with him. Win the election, get seated in the Senate, and then resign to allow the Governor to appoint Strange to the seat. Still makes Alabama rep voters look bad but allows Senate gop to look like they did the right thing.

Tomorrow is the big day. I'll be voting for Jones and hoping we win so it becomes a non issue, and reps still have to eat crow for throwing their support back in for moore, and lost.

11. Republicans are shameless, at least as an institution

At an individual level, some Republicans feel the pangs of shame and have a conscience, but at a national level, they’re immune to both.

In fact, movement conservatism is pretty much predicated on the principle of obnoxious shamelessness ; Donald Trump succeeded in the Republican Party because his obnoxious narcissism built on a culture created by Rush Limbaugh, Anne Coulter, etc, in which being a shameless, sociopathic, jerk is seen as strength. All of movement conservatism is based on loudly rejecting the values of nuance, moderation, and modesty.

Point being, it was inevitable the contemporary GOP would eventually back a child molester, just as they will eventually welcome him if he wins. To do otherwise would be to look “weak” and “compromising” in the face of consensus opinion.
