Paul Krugman's tweets this morning on what keeps him up at night

Three-tweet thread here:

I've been mostly writing and tweeting about economics, simply because others are covering things like the Mueller investigation very well and I know something about econ. But the tax bill, awful as it is, isn't what keeps me up at night 1/

What's obvious, looking both at Trump and Trumpist media, is that they are terrified. They know or strongly suspect that revelations of massive corruption and collusion are just around the corner. What we already know would have led to impeachment proceedings if Trump were D 2/

And the fact that they're terrified should have us terrified. These are people with authoritarian instincts, no respect for democratic norms, facing personal ruin, disgrace and quite possibly jail time. They will lash out -- and it will be a moment of truth for America 3/

to retain power to talk, and in Trump's case possibly to punish us, and how we will overcome it has bothered my nights a number of times.

We are a nation of laws, they are our strength and the means we must use, but some have not been established for all cases and must still be defined in the face of abuse.

These people have no limits to what they may do to keep power. Trump's most used tool is distraction, he's roiling with anger, at us I'm sure for betraying him, and what would be more destructive and distracting, and huge, than nuclear war?

The amount of damage and dismantling of our government (as we know it and understand it to be) is not completely known at this point. But just guessing, I’d say when we do find out the extent of the damage, it will be breath taking. Devastating. Whether we can recover remains to be seen.

are being repeated throughout the country. With good reason.

I agree that the walls are obviously closing in and the Trumpster/Fox News crowd are in full panic. There's no mystery or secret about why the FBI and IC agencies are the object of so much wrath in right-wing circles. Mueller's closing in; Comey (among others) facilitated the downfall and our intelligence communities both here and abroad have and have had these thieves and sellouts under surveillance.

Krugman's right that desperate people will frequently do desperate things. There's no way the Trumpster is going gently into that Good Night. These prople can do a lot more damage on their way out.

When someone with the sole drive of self aggrandizement and no morals whatsoever is about to be destroyed he will do as much damage as he can to as many people as he can before he goes down.
And being the President of the United States gives him one of the largest hammers in history to do his damage with.

It's going to get pretty terrifying before this is over.

Start a really big war in Korea and the Middle East at the same time. Then, in collusion with all the generals he's installed in the White House, declare martial law, cancel elections, arrest the Dems in Congress for treason, arrest reporters, attempt to dissolve Muller et all and the FEB. Set up his own secret police.

And we can sit back and watch the GOP cheer.
