NBC News: From November 2016 to November 2017 there was a 5-point drop in the number of people who call themselves Republicans, from 42% to 37%, according to Gallup. In that same time, the number of people identifying as Democrats stayed flat at 44%.
Do the math and a 2-point edge for the Democrats in party identification, 44% to 42%, has been pushed to 7 points, 44% to 37%, in just one year. Thats getting up into the area that may be a concern for Republicans in the 2018 midterms, where a big swing in party allegiance could lead to a swing in House and Senate seats.

(6,916 posts)GOP has only one way to fix this shift in numbers to Dems -- keep suppressing the heck out of Dem voters.
We must work every day on turnout and stopping voter suppression by the GOP.
Election Day on a Sunday, and more early voting! Say that every day.

(8,380 posts)Voted Republican most of his life...until he voted for Kerry, Obama, Obama, and Clinton for president. Voted straight Dem in our Virginia election in November. Big fan of Rachel. Thinks Trump is a jackass.

(10,024 posts)So there was most likely a greater shift in the Independents than from the staunch reliable Republican voters. This is still a good thing as neither party can win without Independent voters, but not the same as 5% of Republicans suddenly realizing they have been duped all these years and switching party.
We shall see what happens in Alabama, but I doubt many Republicans will vote for Jones. If Jones wins, it may indicate a shift in Independent leaners or a massive GOTV effort by the Democrats.
