The attacks on Mueller push us closer to the precipice

The attacks on Mueller push us closer to the precipice
By E.J. Dionne Jr. Opinion writer December 10 at 7:31 PM

Our democratic republic is in far more danger than it was even a few weeks ago.

Until this point, there was an underlying faith in much of the political world that if Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation of Russian collusion in the election turned up unmistakably damning material about Donald Trump, Republicans in Congress would feel obligated by their commitment to the country’s well-being to accept Mueller’s findings and challenge the president.

We would often hear recollections of how Republicans during Watergate — Sen. Barry Goldwater would inevitably come up — decided that the smoking guns were too smoky and that Richard Nixon had to go. They made clear to him that he no longer had the support of his party.

Surely, said the optimists, we have not drifted so far from decency that this sort of patriotism is beyond us.

Well, it sure seems to be. It’s not surprising that Trump and those on his payroll want to protect him at all costs. But we learned last week that Republicans are deepening their complicity in derailing Mueller’s investigation and burying the facts. The more Mueller imperils Trump, the more McCarthyite the GOP becomes.

Only recently, it was widely assumed that if Trump fired Mueller, many Republicans would rise up to defend our institutions. Now, many in the party are laying the groundwork for justifying a coverup. This is a recipe for lawlessness.

If Mueller goes before completing his work, we are in full dictatorship mode.
And the GOP will have finally killed the republic.

We stand on the precipice of a full blown lawless dictatorship.

Any day now, America will be severely tested.

I pray to God we choose the law and what's right but I know in my heart which way virtually every republican in this country will choose.

Yes, there were courageous and principled Republicans who called for Nixon's resignation but the Democrats had the numbers to impeach him in the House, 241 seats, and had 57 seats in the Senate. They only needed to peel off ten Republican senators to convict and remove him.

The GOP will not vote to remove him from office until they determine he has become a political liability. Up to and unless that day comes "he can shoot someone on 5th Avenue and get away with it."

Our best hope is to win the House in 2018 and impeach him and slow walk the conviction and removal process in the Senate so it is the key issue in 2020 regardless of who wins the GOP nomination.

We are now living in a lawless republican dictatorship, right?

When Mueller is fired by Trump, the mask of democracy will fall away as the entire party backs his treason.

Goodbye America......

Trump is still in office killing freedom and democracy.

I have marched myself and will do it again most likely but it will take a massive blue wave election in 2018 to really have a chance to save American democracy.

That is if we are allowed to vote and the Russians don't just hand the elections over to their republican allies.

. . . of criminal wrongdoing. It's was a great thing, to be sure, and we here sure new that a viper had been put in the White House, but a protest isn't going to remove a POTUS who had not been office long enough to have done anything to be removed.

This time we'd have BOTH going for us and it would be hard for the media to spin the protest as anything other than citizens uniting to demand action regarding a criminal.

At least that's what i hope.

I remember vividly the violent police riots against peaceful Occupy Wall St protesters.

How bad will they get when POTUS and every other republican calls us communist traitors trying to overthrow the government?

During the inauguration, several hundreds of protesters were arrested and charged not only for their conduct but on conspiracy charges for visiting anti-Trump websites. This included journalists.

Protests against Trump will be an opportunity to round-up his enemies en masse. His neo-nazis will incite violence; the protesters will be arrested.

Trump and the Republicans are not only fighting for their political lives, but against criminal charges. Resigning is not an option for Trump and impeachment is not an option for republicans.

Trump may even find a way to shut down the investigation. He and the repubs have started by calling out individual members of the team for bias. Next step investigations by Congress, maybe the DOJ.

There were no arrests. I wasn't arrested.

If you break shit you will end up arrested. If I am arrested for engaging in lawful protest I will sue and am confident I will prevail.

Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial law but that wasn't enough to prevent the protesters from causing his ouster.

His neo-nazis will incite violence;

Maybe in Isolated parts of America but in LA, NY, ATL, DC, CHI, SF, BOS, MIA, et cetera they will be outnumbered 500-1. Here in L A the Deplorables couldn't put 50 people on the street in a pro-Trump march. We put 750,000 on the street. The majority minority LAPD will never stop a peaceful anti-Trump match.

it starts on talk radio - limbaugh has been leading up to this since the inauguration protests, blaming the obama clinton soros cabal and deep state moles in cia fbi etc. he's basically working for putin

these 88 universities are good places to protest rw radio attacks on mueller and the media since they broadccast sports on 257 limbaugh stations, and if those schools were pushed into announcing they would reconsider those associations, in which those stations use those team brands/mascots/logos to attract advertisers, media would notice, and advertisers would flee all talk radio.
