Is he now King of the World? Can't other nations ignore him?

(21,506 posts)Israel has long claimed Jerusalem as the capital. We and other countries have not recognized that choice because of the ongoing dispute over who has rights to Jerusalem.
What he has done is recognized that claim by Israel ahead of any final resolution on the dispensation of Jerusalem.
Certain to inflame the Muslim world as their claims to Jerusalem are every bit as strong religiously as Israels. Still not exactly the same as moving the capital. For all intents and purposes Israel has treated Jerusalem as the capital for years in defiance of the rest of the world.
Completely boneheaded move and sure to create conflict but just wanted to point out that he is not moving the capital it is and has been long serving as the Israeli capital despite the worlds refusal to recognize it as such.

(42,714 posts)No, Trump didn't decide where Israel's capital is. Israel decided that -- in 1949.
What Trump did -- and to be clear I think it was a big mistake -- was to recognize Israel's nearly 70 year old choice of Jerusalem as its national capital and start the process of relocating the US embassy to that city.
And other nations can and will ignore what Trump did and continue not to recognize Israel's choice of Jerusalem as its capital.

(5,455 posts)It doesn't matter that Jerusalem has been the capital of Israel for decades, it doesn't matter that Congress recognized Jerusalem has the capitol of Israel over two decades ago and doesn't matter that there are prominent Democrats in Congress that support the U.S. recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
