CNN exclusive: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand calls on Trump to resign

(CNN)Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York told CNN on Monday that President Donald Trump should resign over allegations of sexual misconduct.

"President Trump should resign," Gillibrand told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview. "These allegations are credible; they are numerous. I've heard these women's testimony, and many of them are heartbreaking."

If he does not "immediately resign," she said, Congress "should have appropriate investigations of his behavior and hold him accountable."

Responding to UN Ambassador Nikki Haley saying that Trump's accusers "should be heard," Gillibrand said: "Not only should women be heard, but they should be believed."

Now, there are some who will say that Sen. Gillibrand's comments about the President won't amount to a hill of beans, and that's quite possibly true. However, it's getting this subject out in the public arena, getting it discussed even if it is summarily dismissed, that leads to it being taken seriously. So, while I don't expect any immediate results to follow on from Gillibrand's comments, it's good to get the subject out there for a serious discussion. If Trump shouldn't be responsible for his rushin' hands and roamin' fingers, let Trump or his supporters explain just why that is. But let's have the discussion.

In addition, I hope that Sen. Gillibrand calls for the resignation of Sen. Rand "Aqua Buddha" Paul of Kentucky. THAT would lead to a far more fruitful discussion and possibly a far more salutary outcome, in my opinion.

…as pro-Franken, who has been one of our most effective, strongest Senators. Sheer madness to knee-cap him a week after the tax reform vote and when the GOP is gearing up to dismiss Mueller.

The ethics investigation Franken wanted would have been a "high road" too. Higher, really. Because so far the accusations against him seem to be making a farce of the serious claims of harassment that women are coming forward with.

perhaps the senator could assist in moving forward or expanding the discussion of one of the articles of impeachment that have been introduced in the House of Representatives. It's certainly possible for her to continue to speak out about the sexual allegations surrounding Trump and to openly and rigorously support the obstruction of justice charges as well.

Mon Dec 11, 2017, 05:09 PM
Dec 2017

Her and a few other top Dems colluded in a back room and decided that they would throw Franken under the bus as a sacrificial lamb in order to be able to play the purity card in demanding Trump pay the same way.

Now there may also have been other exterior motives as well. Like envy that Franken, some former comedian actor, a relative newby, getting so much attention. And/or that the establishment, status quo Dems were fearful that his populism would be an unharnessable problem in the future if they didn't take this opportunity to nip him in the bud.

But for one...it won't work. Mostly because Republicans will never fold like Democrats. They don't have to as long as their base can be manipulated so easily. Look how many Republican voters in Alabama think its all fake news and Democrats scheming behind the Moore charges. She should have know that.

And two...the cost of such a strategy, losing one of your most effective Senators, while at the same time ignoring and ostracizing so much of your own base...is not worth it. I pray she finds that out in time and she and others will be humble enough to admit their mistake, and at least say they will hold him to an ethics investigation before making any resignation demands.

Mon Dec 11, 2017, 07:57 PM
Dec 2017

Some of us don’t believe in canning our own leaders based on unverified hinkey stories. The allegations against Senator Franken have not been investigated and verified. This is not to exclude the possibility that the allegations didn’t have basis in fact; for all I know, they might have happened. I repeat: MIGHT.

But for Senator Gillibrand to lead the charge for Franken to resign without investigation first in this age of Roger Stone dirty tricks and David Daleiden/James O’Keefe selective editing was incredibly naive at best and cynically irresponsible at worst.

The Franken affair was indeed for a moment for Senator Gillibrand. IMO, she did not acquit herself.

the reason it is difficult to depose a president is the opposing party would be doing it every 4 years. If trump colluded with the Russians it is a different story. The way to change is in the voting booth. If the democrats became the majority in Congress we could tie the republicans hands. What she spearheaded against Senator Franken is wrong.

Tue Dec 12, 2017, 12:14 AM
Dec 2017

The Jr. Senator speechifies to not to rely on the party to come and save us all, it's up to us, the resistance, to save ourselves. Well, shit, I just....

I already didn't expect the party to come and save me.

Where I dropped the ball was I just didn't anticipate "my" Democratic party to stick a shiv in the back of my senator from Minnesota.

At this point, I wonder if it's up to ME to tell the Democratic party leadership and not-quite-leadership, to not to eat the paste when they are meeting with children at elementary schools to talk about democracy. They do know this, right?

Further, because I care about kids, I gotta ask: they do know that if they see a child eating paste while they are giving their talks, that they should remove the paste from the kid's hands and put it up on a high shelf where the kid can't get at it, right?

The adults in Democratic party know that Fire alarms mean get out of the building, it's on fire, please, have the sense to save yourself, at least. Then, in the unlikely event that they have the presence of mind, as the adult, to at least take as many children out of the burning building with them as possible.

The junior senator, NY's senior senator, Kamala, Diane, et.al. surely they already know this? Like, wait for the traffic light to turn green before you step out, and even then, it might be prudent to look for some driver distracted because they're speeding toward their second job, that they took, because they can't afford health insurance?

Also, even Nicky Hailey (who voluntarily went to work for Trump) outsmarts the Jr. senator from New York. Victims should be heard.

Here's the part that the junior senator from New York can't figure it out:
Then their stories evaluated for veracity and severity, and then they should be believed if warranted, and then punishment proportional to the offense should be given out.

I think the junior senator from New York should be fitted for clown shoes. Or give her a trick pony and a pink taffeta tutu and she can perform acrobatics on the pony. She'll probably mess that up too, but the fall to ground probably won't break any bones.
