The Still-Raging Thomas Fire Torches Its Way into California Wildfire History

https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/still-raging-thomas-fire-torches-its-way-california-wildfire-history
<snip>
More than 6000 firefighters were engaged in a furious effort on Monday to contain the Thomas Fire, the largest of the multiple wildfires that have pummeled Southern California over the past week. The Thomas Fire made an enormous westward surge on Sunday, consuming tens of thousands of acres in Santa Barbara County and reducing the fire’s total containment level from 15% to 10%. Incredibly, the 57,000 acres burned between Sunday and Monday morning far exceeded the entire coverage of October’s catastrophic Tubbs Fire in the Santa Rosa area (36,807 acres).

As of Monday morning, Cal Fire reported that the Thomas Fire had officially consumed 230,000 acres and at least 790 structures, making it the fifth largest and tenth most destructive wildfire in state history. Two of the top 20 most damaging fires occurred in November, but none of the previous top 20 fires in terms of acreage occurred any later than October—much less in December, well beyond the typical tail end of wildfire season. It’s entirely possible this fire will burn till Christmas and beyond, and not out of the question it will roll past the Cedar Fire of 2003 (273,246 acres) to become California’s largest fire on record.

On Monday morning, evacuation zones extended to the northern and eastern outskirts of the city of Santa Barbara and included coastal communities from Summerland to Carpinteria (see Figure 1). The University of California, Santa Barbara, postponed its final exams till early January.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is working furiously to undo any policies or regulations that might blunt the effect of global climate change, because . . . well, because they're just fucking evil, that's why.

Good afternoon, Thunderblog. It may disturb y'all to know that nearly all mention of Climate Change has been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, epa.gov. Here is proof. I have before and after. It should be easy to tell the difference between before and after.

I'm blaming all this removal on Climate Change from the EPA website on Scott Pruitt. Also, Kathleen Hartnett White, a nominee for the Council on Environmental Quality, is a Climate Change Denier. I doubt that Kathleen Hartnett White knows what science even is. And I don't have to remind you that the USA is the only country not in the Paris Agreement.

Thank You for the Update; Governor Brown was featured on 60 Minutes last night, discussing the fires, as well as his push for renewable energy/solar for the State. His is firm believer on the impacts of climate change, in California in particular, and feels that the new norm for California might be almost year round fire threats................Good interview and here is the link: https://www.cbsnews.com/videos/governor-brown/

destroyed San Diego. Over 3,000 home and structures burned. My school district closed for a week during each fire (in Oct.) and this was a first in our history. The fires jumped 15 lanes of freeway and burned to the ocean and would've burned La Jolla if the winds didn't change suddenly. Fellow teachers and students at my school lost homes in both fires.

Gov Brown said yesterday that this "is the new normal" and he is correct. Brown has been fighting for clean air and to prevent Climate Change in the US and Europe for 30 years.

Meanwhile the White House has "scrubbed" the words "Climate Change" from all the official records as if that will somehow make it stop. The local weather analysts say that this year extreme highs and lows will be occurring throughout the country for the next 6 months.

I just sent it to my sister and mom. Brown inherited a mess after Arnold Schwarzenegger left. We pay high taxes on everything (a new gas tax has just been introduced in fact). I wish some of the money would filter down to public schools. We are ranked 46th in the country when it comes down to how much state money goes to each student and it is bare bones down here.

The White House sends coal reps to a Climate Change convention. Unbelievable. We are the laughing stock of the world. The fucking moron doesn't give a shit about anyone except himself. He doesn't even care how climate change will effect his grand kids. He probably thinks that the billions of tax free inheritance they get will allow them to build a golden castle up in the sky, away from the nasty ravages of mother nature and the worthless minions who aren't filthy rich 1%ers.

I am actually afraid to open the door for fear of smelling smoke, seeing a diffused light from the sun, and ashes falling from the sky. That sort of feeling never goes away after you have experienced twice already.. "The new normal" I could live without.

so I remember those days very clearly. Many memories of those apocalyptic days.

I have to disagree with you though, the Cedar Fire didn't burn to the ocean, and while it was a fearsome, destructive fire with staggering losses, it didn't destroy San Diego.

Here's a map, one of many available:

It crossed the 15/163 merge and was headed for La Jolla and would've burned it if the winds didn't shift.

But you said it "burned to the ocean" and actually, no it didn't, nor was San Diego destroyed.

I don't disagree at all regarding the magnitude of the devastation, the thousands of homes lost and lives ended and altered forever. It was indeed a terrible fire, and I still remember going outside at 4 am to see the flames coming over the hillside.

Not trying to be contrary, just want to keep the record straight.
