Sorry it came to this, but it's totally the fault of JoePa, upper management at Penn St (who behaved like a typical,
callous, clownservative corporation and enabled the worst sort of criminal) and the people who worship sports.

NCAA needs to come out with severe penalty for the football program tomorrow

That woman may have a point. It seems at least some of the testimony was coached by the cops. See http://www.prairie2.com/search?q=sandusky . If the most pivotal testimony was coached, is it a sure thing that Sandusky was guilty?

Even if you discount the victims that MIGHT have been affected, there were still enough counts to nail him. In addition, the jury did not think they were coached or they would have found him innocent on those counts.

Don't even start talking about Sandusky not being guilty!

The jury may not have heard the coaching.

People get wrongly convicted all the time. That's why DNA evidence has exonerated so many on death row.

It's not that I think Sandusky is not guilty. It's just that I think if we're an open and honest discussion board we should not be quick to dismiss opinions that differ from our own. Like it's just obvious that that woman is all wrong, right? Or maybe her opinion is worth a listen. You never know.

and therefore any further discussion of his guilt or innocence is not valid?

All I said was:

1) There is no sense in deriding someone just for questioning his guilt; and

2) There is reason to suspect that the most compelling evidence was invalid, because it was coached.

And I'm told, "Don't even start talking about Sandusky not being guilty!" and "That is the standard of proof in this country. If you can come up with a better one, let's hear about it," meaning, what, that I'm not supposed to question Paterno's guilt or innocence unless I come up with a system that is better than our current jury system?

What is DU supposed to be, a discussion board or an echo chamber?

I've gone back to the link. Perhaps I put too much credence into this, because I heard it from Mike Malloy, and he often turns out to be right. But at the link there is no real evidence, just assertions.

Even so, it strikes me as insular behavior to cut off discussion of the possibility that Sandusky might not be guilty just because he's been convicted.

It's sure better than going by that one uninformed woman thinks. She clearly doesn't know there's been a THOROUGH investigation. Hundreds of people interviewed, records obtained, timelines done, facts ferreted out. Paterno was found to have known, and turned his head away in the name of football and money, willing to serve up children on a platter to an evil man. You don't get a statue for that.

I said she may have a point. How do you know she's uninformed?

There was also a thorough investigation of the Central Park rapist case some 25 years ago, or whatever it was, with many, many people interviewed, facts ferreted out, etc. There were convictions -- which were overturned years later, once DNA evidence became available.

Why this aversion to even considering a different possibility?

even if he didn't want to know, that he wilingly turned his head and ignored the situation, which enabled Sandusky to go on and continue to assault and rape children and adolescent boys for years.

Are you going to sit here and defend Sandusky, after his own damn adopted son said he was molested? After there was evidence up to the rafters, including the guy at the high school that wouldn't let him come back anymore because he was fondling a kid right in his face?

There was a MOUNTAIN of evidence that this guy is WAY too familiar with young boys, testimony that he touched them inappropriately, and testimony that he raped one of them. He isn't being slandered - he got away with being a molester for far too damn long is the problem.

I've posted this elsewhere in the Sandusky / Paterno threads, but I got a real taste of the "cult of football" in the junior and senior years of my high school, in California.

I was basically a hippie in those days, so far into music and art and movies and all things creative that I never gave a rat's ass about sports...still don't, as an adult.

And if you didn't worship the football team, and especially the coach, who was a thug and a bully, you drew a sharp line in the sand.

I drew that line, I didn't give a shit.

The worst part of this "JoPa" nonsense is that he knew he was dying, he knew what he did, he had a chance to come clean, but he chose to die as he lived...a fucking coward.

There's no thermostat in Hell, Joe...right now is as cool as it's ever going to get.
