Pence's visit to Israel delayed

Pence's visit to Israel delayed
By Oren Liebermann and James Masters, CNN

(CNN)US Vice President Mike Pence has delayed his upcoming visit to Israel for several days, spokespeople for the Speaker of the Israeli Parliament and Foreign Ministry told CNN on Thursday.

The delay comes as Congress prepares to vote on a sweeping tax reform bill, and amid an ongoing outcry over President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the US embassy to the holy city.

Pence's vote could be crucial to Republican hopes of passing a major tax reform bill before the end of the year. With Republicans holding a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate -- and some key Republican senators still uncommitted -- Pence holds the tiebreaking vote in the event of an even split. Delaying the Jerusalem visit and keeping the vice president in Washington allows Pence to cast that vote if tax reform moves forward next week.

Pence's office has not confirmed the delay.

Man who holds keys to holy Christian site in Jerusalem will refuse to welcome Pence

The official custodian in charge of the keys to one of the most sacred sites in Christianity will not welcome Vice President Pence when he visits the Old City of Jerusalem this month.

“It has come to our attention that Vice President Pence intends to make an official visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and asked me to receive him officially,” Adeeb Joudeh, who is responsible for the keys to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, wrote in a letter on Wednesday, according to Israel's Channel 2 News.

“I absolutely refuse to officially welcome the American Vice President Mr. Mike Pence at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and I will not be physically in church during his visit," he continued.

“This is an expression of my condemnation of President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel."

But it's amazing to me that the Trump administration has so alienated so many people that even the custodian of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has had enough. Joudeh said he wouldn't officially welcome Pence, but doesn't go so far as to say that Pence would be refused admittance. If they do let Pence in (whenever he does visit), I hope they frisk him on the way out. Pence strikes me as the kind of vandal who would loot a sacred artifact or two.
