(21,577 posts)WASHINGTON The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that Scott Pruitt, the chief of the agency, had signed a measure to repeal President Barack Obamas signature policy to curb greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, setting up a bitter fight over the future of Americas efforts to tackle global warming.
Mr. Pruitt, who had signaled the move at an event with coal miners in eastern Kentucky on Monday, said in a news release that his predecessors had departed from regulatory norms in writing the Clean Power Plan, which was finalized in 2015 and would have pushed states to move away from coal in favor of sources of electricity that produce fewer carbon emissions.
Describing the Obama-era regulation as the so-called Clean Power Plan, the E.P.A. statement said that repealing the measure will also facilitate the development of U.S. energy resources and reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens associated with the development of those resources.
The repeal proposal, which will be filed in the Federal Register on Tuesday, fulfills a promise President Trump made to eradicate his predecessors environmental legacy. Eliminating the Clean Power Plan makes it less likely that the United States can fulfill its promise as part of the Paris climate agreement to ratchet down emissions that are warming the planet and contributing to heat waves and sea-level rise. Mr. Trump has vowed to abandon that international accord.

(19,863 posts)... ur bills will increase as now the ISP can charge you ala carte prices for google access, Netflix access, Amazon, Hulu, ESPN 360, etc, etc, etc. Expect internet bills in the $hundreds like our gas, electricity, water bills.
This is just shameful GREED by the rethugs.

(19,863 posts)are online. You can still get hard copy text books by special request. But then you have that "peer pressure" stuff where other kids are doing things online and yours are using hard copy books.
Yes, we could go to the public library for internet access, but due to budget cuts, lots of libraries have been closed, and the ones that are open only have limited computers which are nearly always fully occupied.

(37,457 posts)that's the problem, in a nutshell. You could try satellite but it sucks in general and tends to be expensive.
eta: Satellite is also local in the sense that AFAIK they are all based in the USA. If not, someone will correct me.
eta2: You can also seek out a very small ISP in your area who may actually care about your well-being and not be so greedy. I'm not sure how the big "backbone providers" play into all this. I'm sure someone knows.

(33,643 posts)though ...
The ones that are going to be out en-masse (Russia Trolls, the Faux-Bots, etc) trying to claim 'it's just reversing rules made by the Dirty Black Muslim in 2015!?! We're just going back to what was, and what was wrong with your internet before that? These ISP's weren't doing any of this stuff before 2015, so why would they now'?
Is it something like 'in 2015 all the old rules were superseded/made void by the new regulatory scheme, and now that scheme is gone, so now there's NO regulations whereas prior to 2015, we in fact already had a lot of rules protecting neutrality?'
That accurate at all, or?
