The Trump administration has announced plans to withdraw a regulation that would have required organic egg producers to give their hens room to graze outdoors.
The move was widely anticipated; the U.S. Department of Agriculture has repeatedly delayed the date on which these regulations would go into effect. But organic advocates still reacted with outrage and promised to fight the decision in court.
It's an unusual situation, because in this case the demand for regulation is coming from the very organic farmers who would need to meet those new rules. But those farmers say those rules are needed to maintain a level playing field in the organic industry.
Current organic rules require animals to have "access" to the outdoors. The largest egg producers, however, have built chicken houses that hold tens of thousands of hens, and the hens have access to the outdoors only through small enclosed "porches." Under the new rules, finalized at the end of the Obama administration, these porches would no longer be adequate.

Why is it necessary to make them live and die entirely inside?

(15,810 posts)I have 6 chickens on my half acre. They have a 6x6 hen house that opens into a 12x10 fully enclosed pen that is covered and dry. When Im home, I open the door to the enclosed pen so they can wander the whole half acre.
When Im not here, they have their house and pen. Nothing gets in. If there wasnt an enclosed pen, Id find only feathers in a day or so. Hawks, coyotes, raccoons.

(Not speaking about YOUR situation there...it's just that you'd think fencing off commercial agricultural property would simply be part of the deal).

(15,810 posts)I can afford to set a concrete footing in the ground and bury wire to keep the predators that dig from coming in. I also keep things covered up top to keep hawks from diving in. Chickens are apparently very tasty creatures.
I have friends that have some sort of small scale egg farm and their barn is fairly secure with some big covered outdoor space. But now and then something finds a way in and slaughters a few hens, even with roosters standing guard. Multiply that size a bunch and Im guessing it becomes even more difficult to keep things secure.
Im not arguing for large scale farming of chickens. I keep hens so that I dont have to deal with factory eggs, and its easy for me to do. But its hard to keep predators out!
