Learning from Alabama and Looking Ahead: The Return of the Democrats

This is kind of a delayed reaction post, but I had wanted to write one and due to busy work schedule was not able to, so better late than never.

We won in Alabama. We won in a deep south bible-thumping state where for many democrats are equivalent to satan. Let that sink in for a moment.

And I will be completely honest. I never thought that we would win this election. Even after reading the favorable poll #s, reading the uplifting messages on DU from people working on the grounds in Bama, I still could not think that we would be able to pull it off. And yet we did.

The lessons from this election are simple to me- as a party we win when we are united. In the the important elections this year we have been UNITED as a group. We have put aside our differences and joined hands to make sure that we elect people who represent our party and its members interests. When Democrats are united, there is nothing that Republicans can do to beat us. We will always win as a united group because our base encompasses a diverse and rich tapestry.

We are a party for the poor and the middle class, a party for the straight and the LGBTQ community, a party for women and men, a party for immigrants, a party for the educated and for the labor force, a party for the military. At the end of the day, we are a party for anyone with a dream to do better for themselves and their loved ones.

And yes, we will have struggles ahead of us. Our party is one that allows for dissent, for self-expression and debate, so there will be moments when we will not agree on all the issues.

But we have to remember to always be united and support one another. We must make sure to come out and vote for our candidates, because in this day and age it is too dangerous to not exercise your right to vote.

I can sense that over the past few months our party is gaining steam and momentum. Our arguments are starting to resonate across the country. The pundits talk about first time conservative voters that Trump was able to motivate to come out and vote for him. Well, we got a large base of liberals ready to step out of the shadows and vote for us as well.

Let's keep working hard and I know 2018 is going to be an even better year for our party. There are a lot more "alabamas" out there than we know. Places with voters who are willing to vote for democrats, but have never been sought out to do so.

It's the Return of the Democrats, and there is nothing the GOP can do to stop us.

Have a great weekend!

We must work hard in every single election. Getting people registered, making sure they have the proper id to vote, getting them out to vote and not just in the national elections! Alabama was a great night but we have to remember that having a horrible republican candidate played into that, it won't be as obvious in many of the other elections.
