Macon Brock, co-founder of Dollar Tree and a prominent philanthropist, dies at 75

Macon Brock died in his wife’s arms Saturday morning.

Macon Brock was a pillar in the Hampton Roads business and philanthropic communities. As a co-founder and former CEO of Dollar Tree, Brock lived what many believed to be the American dream. Not only that, he wanted to make a difference in the community. He and his wife were known to donate to educational and environmental causes, as well as the arts community. They served on various boards at colleges and community and environmental organizations.

Brock started K&K Toys with his father-in-law and brother-in-law, Douglas Perry, in 1970, according to Dollar Tree’s website. The toy store grew into 130 stores along the East Coast.

The couple, who have three children and six grandchildren, also helped with the creation of the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health at Eastern Virginia Medical School, which aims to train community-oriented physicians and health care professionals.

The donation from the Brocks was one of the largest to the school, according to EVMS’ website.
