He can't fire anyone in the FBI directly except the top dog. He would have to get someone in the FBI to do the firing. I'm thinking that the agents themselves are protected against being fired without cause.

Sessions (or Trump) can fire Rosenstein and either can appoint a replacement. The replacement can fire Mueller. That said, all these predictions of Mueller being fired have been going on for months now and none have come true.

And the Senate is staying in pro forma sessions for the holiday, so no recess appointments.

This is why I have been screaming, protesting, emailing and posting for an Independent Commission for 9 months. An Independent Commission would be like the 9/11 Commission. The Dems have introduced bills in both houses calling for this and since the GOP is in charge it hasn't been adopted and passed. It would be fully funded and staffed, relatively quick, non partisan (couldn't be derailed by the GOP), and the findings would be available to the public.
