Two very interesting, almost science-fiction sounding articles appeared in todays New York Times about the U.S. Governments studies of UFO phenomena.
Apparently, a program was begun in 2007 to research UFOs.
Hovering 50 feet above the churn was an aircraft of some kind whitish that was around 40 feet long and oval in shape. The craft was jumping around erratically, staying over the wave disturbance but not moving in any specific direction, Commander Fravor said. The disturbance looked like frothy waves and foam, as if the water were boiling.

For years, the program investigated reports of unidentified flying objects, according to Defense Department officials, interviews with program participants and records obtained by The New York Times. It was run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagons C Ring, deep within the buildings maze.
The Defense Department has never before acknowledged the existence of the program, which it says it shut down in 2012. But its backers say that, while the Pentagon ended funding for the effort at that time, the program remains in existence. For the past five years, they say, officials with the program have continued to investigate episodes brought to them by service members, while also carrying out their other Defense Department duties.
Sen. Harry Reid (among others) was involved in the program.

Rumors at other Air Force bases about the topic are interesting.

(362 posts)Whatever the truth, its certainly interesting that this sort of thing is taken seriously by people at high levels of government. (And apparently in other governments.)

If nothing else the military would like weapon system information.

(362 posts)My dad went to Brigham Young (though hes a secular Jew, not a Mormon) and I actually have long been interested in the LDS.
It is true that there are some astro-theological elements to the LDS : they understand God to be a literal being of flesh and bone who inhabits another world in physical space. Asking whether that makes Mormons more open to the possibility of extraterrestrial contact might make for an interesting cultural research study.
This seems to go beyond that, and involves other Senators as well as servicemen.

(362 posts)Im not Mormon, but it certainly is an interesting religion. The esoteric and astro-theological aspects of LDS theology have been downplayed a bit in the last several decades but theyre still part of the faith and may affect community beliefs.

(47,263 posts)Certainly is a possibility that Earth and humans were created by an advanced and talented species living on anther planet.

(362 posts)A 2009 Pentagon briefing summary of the program prepared by its director at the time asserted that what was considered science fiction is now science fact, and that the United States was incapable of defending itself against some of the technologies discovered. [Senator] Reids request for the special designation was denied.
