Hilary Franz, Washington State Public Lands commissioner just ordered Aquaculture Pacific to shut down and are terminated. Some one (Franz) with smarts! How happy I am, THANK YOU commissioner. Cook's farmed fish site has six cages OUTSIDE their leased area , causing navigation hazards. Nothing like corporate America pushing the issue thinking they are going to get away with it. The farm is also polluting the water with fragments of styrofoam crumbling off its floats. Anchor line are missing or damaged (remember the last Atlantic fish escape around the moon eclipse time?). This poses a risk of collapse and fish escape AGAIN as what happened last summer at another Cook farm at Cypress Island. Cooke Aquaculture also changing their oil over the water (you common man try that and see what happens) Cooke Aquaculture Pacific received notice from Washington state to terminate their lease...
what joy...maybe our natural salmon and the Native Americans will survive and the many species that depend on wild salmon.
Joel Richardson, vice president, public relations for Cooke company the letter terminating their lease was a surprise...really, you mean you thought nothing would be done about the abuse of the enviroment? It makes me think the general public is seen as easy to manipulate.

(33,419 posts)no doubt they'll take it to court and settle somewhere south of termination, but that's a strong opening bid.

(20,590 posts)Port Angeles Harbor, where the Cook pens are located, is in process of cleanup. They always thought the harbor would clean out naturally but they found it did not. Wood waste contributes to less oxygen situation as well as the industry waste that was dumped into the harbor for a century. That pen should never have been located there.
Good for Washington State on this one. Now, they should not be allowed to put pens in the Strait.
