Dems hold out on the CR, government shutdowns down, then Dems are blamed. redumbliCONs are a bunch of drama queens and would be whining and reeling for months or years.

rich Democrats might get a win/win from this tax bill.

Great for their financial future.

Great talking point for the 2018 elections.

Are there any Democrats willing to "go to the mattresses" for this blatant giveaway to the donor class and personal avarice to be paid for by our children and grandchildren?

Democrats in Congress cannot do anything right now. They can't force anything. They can't stop anything. Everything in Congress is voted on, and Democrats are in the minority.

They can't hold anything hostage. Please try to understand the realities of Congress.

Thanks.

We can't stop the tax bill with the votes we have. The repubs can pass it without us.

On the CR, the situation is different. The reason that a shutdown is a possibility is that the repubs need some Democrats to support funding the government because there are enough crazies in the repub party that won't vote for the continuing resolution as to create the risk of a shutdown.

You might think that gives Democrats leverage. But that leverage goes away as soon as the repubs pass the tax bill. Then were stuck being viewed, fairly or not, as the ones who prevented a CR from going through to fight a train that already has left the station.

It's one thing to stand firm against the CR unless it deals with DACA and/or CHIP; its another thing to stand firm against the CR unless a completely separate bill is changed or not enacted.

When the government is shut down real people are hurt. Not to mention, every major Democrat can be found in the Congressional record asking for a "clean" CR back in the Obama years. It is good that they are trying to get some good done, but - just as with the Republicans in the Obama years when they wanted minor things like repealing ACA - the Republicans will never give up their ONE legislative "accomplishment".
