Teachers at Columbus charter school move to join union

Source: Columbus Dispatch

By Charlie Boss

The teachers and staff members at Franklinton Preparatory Academy knew the significance of forming a union. And they wanted to make sure the charter school’s administration knew it as well.

“The decision to become the first unionized charter school in central Ohio was not taken lightly,” the teachers wrote to the academy’s leaders last month. “We are, above all, dedicated to the mission of our school, the premise that ‘all students, irrespective of differences, can learn at high levels and graduate from high school.’”

The Franklinton Preparatory Academy Educators Association would be the first charter-school union affiliated with the Ohio Education Association, the state’s largest teachers union.

“They were frustrated by the working conditions they were facing,” OEA Vice President Scott DiMauro said. “They came to the conclusion that only through a union and working collectively could they bring about a change necessary in order to serve the needs of their students.”

FULL great story at link.

Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of charter schools? KamaAina Feb 2015 #1
But, but, but ... teacher unions are bad -- that's why there are charter schools. /sar NCjack Feb 2015 #2
Hopefully, the NLRB will certify them for a vote. There's a prior NLRB ruling msanthrope Feb 2015 #3

regarding charter union formation out of Illinois......so the prospective union may not be able to join the OEA (but would still be able to organize under federal law) if Ohio's laws regarding charters are similar to Illinois.

This is encouraging, tho. Hope it catches on with other teachers. It would make charter schools a less attractive grift, and wouldn't THAT be nice!

This for-profit publicly financed charter factory of greed is going to pull a fast Wal Mart (just like what they did in Canada when the workers voted for a Union, they closed the placed down).
Hope it works, but there governor and the legislature may and will probably say something about this plan
