DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) Rocket salvoes hit a previously safe section of Ukraine's rebel stronghold of Donetsk on Wednesday, killing at least five people and damaging a hospital, six schools and five kindergartens, rebels said.
The fighting between Russia-backed separatists and government troops in eastern Ukraine escalated sharply in January, with more than 220 civilians killed in the past three weeks alone, according to the United Nations. The world body has sharply criticized both sides for indiscriminate shelling that is causing civilian deaths.
The rebel-run Donetsk News Agency, citing police, reported five people killed by shelling around the hospital in the city's western Tekstilshchik district. City officials in Donetsk said the number of casualties could not immediately be established.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene shortly after the attack found one body covered by a sheet on the ground near a crater from a projectile. The hospital was damaged by shrapnel and its windows were shattered.

(6,419 posts)If they want peace as some of the brainwashed believe, why would they be actively expanding the territory they occupy, and keep increasing it?
We all know the want to occupy all of eastern Ukraine so Russia has a road to Crimea. That's why people are dying--for Putin's New Russia.

(3,982 posts)Ukraine was talking about 3 new offensives that were being prepared for (how harsh or "defensive" those were meant really does not matter, just discussing them destablizes things). On January 15th the legislature approved additional conscription to prepare. After that everything fell apart.
LOGIC: Very predictably, with mistrust already heavy, the rebels decided to take the offensive and not wait (theoretically until Kiev was fully prepared).
All the EVIDENCE so far points to their using this to round out the borders as the borders as they were (with the big whole in the middle and half the City airport under Ukraine control) was not defensible.
Just as everyone claimed last year that they were going for a route to Crimea (and they were wrong), there are no indications that is what they are doing.
Now, the worse things get, again LOGIC and HUMAN NATURE there is a good chance they could eventually say "to hell with it" , and if there is not going to be compromise OF COURSE continuing war will eventually **cause** these predictions to come true.
I used to think it was pretty much only conservatives that thought the best answer to all such things was war, and they have been proven wrong again and again and again. Now it seems that even "liberals" in the US are so brainwashed by years of war thinking some have lost their wisdom too.
By the way: BOTH the US ambassador to NATO and a general in Kiev have admitted in the last few days that while they believe that regular Russian forces are not in East Ukraine. They believe that advisors and strategists may be (kind of like with the US). So maybe finally the tide has turned on that exaggeration.

(3,982 posts)Action Reaction over and over. That is how wars work.
Which is why the best thing to do is find a solution. It sounds like Europe is open to peacekeepers. Those could have been in place long ago and save a lot of additional suffering.
And is there a problem with peacekeepers in this situation?
I never did understand the objection to federalization. All it meant really was that the Kiev President could no longer install cronies in which was one of the methods that brought the corruption. It would actually be a good thing to federalize all the regions and then elect those leaders through votes. Maybe that was why Kiev fought it?

(2,116 posts)That the rebels are firing missiles at themselves. This could not possibly be the Kiev controlled forces in their white hats!
Manifest Destiny
(139 posts)are supposedly killing themselves. Matt Lee of the Associated Press has been grilling Jen Psaki on that constant lie. She seems to be making a fool of herself at this point. Every incident she blames on the rebels even though all the victims are the families of the rebels.

That makes no sense.
