Labor Board certifies union election at GD Copper USA plant in Wilcox County[AL]

The National Labor Relations Board certified the election held last year at GD Copper USA, giving employees the authority to collectively bargain with the company's management.

In a decision released at the end of January, a hearing officer dismissed challenges to the outcome. The company claimed the union campaign leading up to the vote included threats to employees, coercion and intimidation tactics to sway workers into joining.

In a 65-page decision, the federal regulator struck down five objections made by GD Copper after weighing two days of testimony from employees and union representatives. A hearing was held in Selma on Dec. 10 and 11 last year.

GD Copper USA is the manufacturing plant that makes copper tube products. China's Golden Dragon Precise Copper and Tubing Group, the parent company, was lured to the community of Sunny South in rural Wilcox County, signing an agreement with the state in January 2012.
