Sign-ups for health plans on the federal Affordable Care Act marketplaces in Nebraska and Iowa passed 100,000 by the end of January, well ahead of last year’s pace, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday.

In Nebraska, 64,008 people either signed up or were automatically re-enrolled in plans, with 23,962, or more than one-third, in the Omaha metro area. By the end of the open enrollment period last year, 42,975 people in Nebraska had chosen plans.

In Iowa, 38,243 people signed up or were automatically re-enrolled, the department said. By the end of last year’s open enrollment period, 29,163 people had selected plans. Nationally, 7.5 million people have enrolled or have been automatically re-enrolled so far during this year’s open enrollment.
