S.F. won’t press charges against deputy public defender

Source: SFGATE

San Francisco police will not pursue charges against the deputy public defender who was arrested at the Hall of Justice when she objected to city police officers questioning a client outside a courtroom, Police Chief Greg Suhr said Wednesday.

The announcement came after the American Civil Liberties Union called for a review of department policy at a police commission meeting, saying the incident, which was filmed and viewed millions of times, raised serious questions about departmental tactics, especially in terms of racial profiling.

Attorney Jami Tillotson was handcuffed and held in a detention cell for an hour Jan. 27 after she denied police officers’ attempts to take photos of her client and his co-defendant, both young African American men.

Tillotson’s client had just made an appearance with a co-defendant for a misdemeanor theft charge when they left the courtroom and were questioned by a plainclothes police officer around 2 p.m., authorities said.

3. I can envision the DA doing a facepalm over that one

I suspect there will be some more chapters to this story. It sounds like there's at least two investigations going on over this even if the public defender doesn't sue.

In the halls of justice, the only justice is in the halls.

Lenny knew the SF-PD after a couple of experiences with them.

NAACP locals and Amos Brown. this story will be quietly put to rest by the local press since it doesn't involve east bay cops and race relations. Look for background stories about the involved cop's dedication to his community. maybe he'll save some puppies. I know, I'c cynical but the past 20 years occaisional personal non-criminal involvement with SF's ...uh... "finest" has been a positive experience.

They think they are above the law, not subject to it, just like everyone else. They cultivate and encourage a siege mentality to justify their disproportionately savage reactions to even minor offenses. The only people they "protect and serve" are the ruling elite. There are good, dedicated police, my stepson is one, but they are far outnumbered by those who should never have been given a badge or a gun in the first place. They threaten, intimidate, and often murder, anyone who asserts their constitutional rights.
Ms. Tillotson's arrest was blatantly illegal, but, as is always the case, others will lie to defend one of their own, and no one will be held responsible for this outrageous travesty of justice.
I hope she sues their evil asses. Given the hundreds of millions of dollars that settlements cost municipalities annually, you'd think city governments would smarten up and rein in or weed out the psychotic thugs on their police forces.

What many people don't realize is that those psychotic thugs are there to protect the rich and powerful from the poor when the day
arrives and the masses rise up in revolt.
