Pope Francis to address Congress, first pontiff to do so
Source: Chicago Tribune
Pope Francis will address a joint meeting of the House and Senate on Sept. 24, becoming the first pontiff to do so, House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday.
"We're humbled that the Holy Father has accepted our invitation and certainly look forward to receiving his message on behalf of the American people," Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters.
Boehner is Catholic and extended the invitation for the pope to speak to lawmakers.
During his planned trip this fall, Francis is also expected to visit the White House as well as speak at the United Nations in New York and participate in a massive Catholic rally for families in Philadelphia.

But seriously; I hope Pope Francis turns to Boehner and explains to him that a political party based on pure, undiluted greed is very very much not the party Jesus would want representing him.

As to the message.. It would be nice if the pope were to use the platform provided to give the politics of "I got mine, fuck you" a serious bloody nose. But I doubt the invitation would have been extended if that was a real likelihood.

(14,061 posts)But, on second thought, nah, probably not. You need some kind of social and moral conscience for that to happen.
Nevertheless, I am looking forward to hearing what the Pope has to say to this august body.
Probably the closest "come to Jesus" meeting these assholes will ever have.
