Army rules Fort Hood shooting victims eligible for Purple Heart

Source: Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON — The Army announced Friday that it will award the Purple Heart to victims of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, after years of resistance.

Texas lawmakers welcomed news that the shooting spree, which left 13 people dead and more than 30 wounded, would no longer be classified as an act of “workplace violence,” given the shooter proclaimed himself a jihadi.

“This has been a long, hard fight. The victims of this attack have struggled, suffered and been abandoned by this administration. No more,” said Rep. John Carter, the Round Rock Republican whose district includes Fort Hood, the nation’s largest military installation.

“Today is a day of victory, and I am honored to have fought on their behalf.”

What a pile of bullshit out of someone who belongs to a party that for the past decade, "abandoned' every veteran in existence. They used them and then threw them away, refusing to fund ANYTHING related to their care and well-being.

is there anything a republican won't demean? I'll give you a hint: military decorations should never take the recipient by surprise.

it gives the wounded added benefits which they really need. It also heals a sore point with the military, where there was widespread support for awarding Purple Hearts.

5. I guess I don't get it.

I'm all for the added benefits but I really feel that purple hearts are awarded in a combat zone where being wounded in combat is a constant accepted threat. Seems like it shouldn't happen by happenstance. That said I'd rather congress did a one time bill granting additional help to the survivors if it is needed.

They assume that getting wounded in a terror attack will result in a purple heart.

8. What? If a military member is wounded in a deliberate enemy action...

... they should be awarded a Purple Heart. Period.

By your standards, the wounded at Pearl Harbor shouldn't have gotten a Purple Heart because it was surprise attack in peace time.

12. These people were targeted for being part of the military on a military installation.

I think giving them a Purple Heart is the least we can do. I think we should fire anyone that tried to prevent this.
