Obama: 'I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth'
Source: MSNBC
President Obama said he related to middle class Americans looking for a chance, as he highlighted his administrations efforts to retrain unemployed workers for new jobs.
"I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Michelle wasn't, either," the president said to a crowd of 400 students at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. But somebody gave us a chance. Just like these folks up here are looking for a chance.
The Obama campaign has pushed wealth and economic fairness arguments against Mitt Romney, who would be one of the wealthiest presidents in history -- and that quote was quickly seen as a veiled reference to his GOP opponent this fall.

(10,479 posts)intentional but that saying is older than I am and has been around for ages. But the media will try to take advantage of it.

(24,347 posts)Obama wasn't a child of privilege--and that can't be parsed. He just wasn't. One look at his background will tell anyone with half a brain and an ounce of sanity that.

(10,479 posts)just commenting on the age of the saying. Maybe you never heard that saying. Everyone uses it . I can say the same thing. I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth either. I certainly was not putting Obama down for saying it.

(41,991 posts)Of course the RW will counter with something about him being born in Kenya but there you go. He states the obvious, they state the crazy. Might as well accept that and take off the gloves.

(153,202 posts)is it trashes someone for simply being born into wealth. That's not the problem. We don't hate people for being born into wealth. The problem is when they use that wealth to become Class-A ASSHOLES.

(45,274 posts)most very rich people, no matter whether they're jerks or not, don't have much comprehension of the lives of ordinary Americans. It's not unreasonable for people to take that into account when considering political candidates.

(153,202 posts)oddly enough, I was discussing that last night with a coworker - how much I resent people who have never, not ONE day in their lives had to worry about bills/finances/retirement (try to THINK about that) thinking they can relate to us - really, I don't think they can, even if they WANT to

"I'm rich ... Rich people don't have problems, we have concerns."

(4,393 posts)There have been privileged people who can, notable FDR, but Mittens is a smug elitist, contemptuous of people who need a shower after a day's work.

But this will provide THE contrast with Romney.
Oh, did silver spoons even exist in Kenya back in 1961? Oh no, just kidding.

(2,116 posts)I want to live my life without fear that I could easily not get the chance to "make it", but instead wind up poor, uninsured, one trip up away from being destitute.
Yeah, I know this is a different way to take this, but it drives me crazy that a chance like a lottery is the prevailing meme.

(4,393 posts)I'm fonder of the New Deal Democrats, who aimed to provide working families with guaranteed security, than with the hip modern Democrats since the 70s who seem to say, "Sure, half or more of Americans are going to wallow in poverty and we don't have much to say about that, but hey, we'll make sure everyone has some theoretical chance of making it!"

(4,393 posts)Obama didn't even mention him by name, but sure enough, Mittens bit the hook. Instead of pivoting to a pithy criticism of the president, he got defensive, and that never helps.
Poor stiff, plastic, out-of-touch Mitt. I have no doubt that Obama will be able to set him up and knock him down again, again, and again.
