White Men Hunting Blacks Sentenced
Source: TDB/AP
Three white men who admitted they were hunting black people have been sentenced to federal prison for their murder of a 47-year-old car-plant worker in Mississippi in 2011. Deryl Paul Dedmon received 50 years, John Aaron Rice was handed 18 1/2 years, and Dylan Wade Butler received seven years. All were charged with the commission of a hate crime. The three beat, ran over, and killed James Craig Anderson. They had also assaulted and harassed homeless black people who they thought would not tell the police.

(6,936 posts)Thank God there is no more racism in America. Imagine what would be the outcome if there was still racism? (other than heads exploding in the right-wing propagandasphere)
Do I even need to say that?

(11,523 posts)And while I'm glad that those sick bastards got sent to prison I feel it should be life without the possibility of parole. I jut absolutely cannot comprehend the ignorance and hatred that lives inside of people like those three.

(16,069 posts)Reeves went on to point out the sadness and the irony of the day.
"Each defendant was escorted in by African-American U.S. Marshals, prosecuted by an African-American Assistant U.S. Attorney, from an office headed by an African-American U.S. Attorney, under an African-American Attorney General, and my final act will be to turn them over to the Bureau of Prisons, which is also led by an African American," he said.

(53,661 posts)That's why the racists want to destroy the government just as in the days of the CSA.
It took a while, but justice was done. I'm happy they've been brought to account for this!
The look on their faces must have been priceless, if he said that in open court.
At least they took these goons off the streets. None of them should ever be let out of prison. Such depravity cannot be cured, they are a danger to society.
And K&R for 'It's about damned time!'

(11,841 posts)I would imagine most people already know the judge at least.
Now if they brought them in from somewhere else specifically to screw with these idiots heads, that would be a different story

(13,184 posts)Especially combined with two life sentences at the state level. That's for the driver, Dedmond.
The other young, stupid racist punks who were along for the ride will also have plenty of time behind bars to reflect.

That doesn't seem like much for murder. Especially when it's a hate crime. Maybe I'm missing a component of this story. (Wouldn't be the first time)

(28,552 posts)... the man got 50 years. One of the other 2 got 15, another got 7. I believe there are more to come.

(62,451 posts)While the sentences seem light, at least we know they are going to prison.
Somehow, I get the impression that they thought they could actually murder a black person and would not be punished.
The story said Dedmon apologized to Anderson's family. Since he was @20 when he committed the murder, I also get the impression he was brought up in a home where hate was taught and practiced and now after he gets sentenced and faces most of his life in prison, he is coming to the realization that blacks are human also.
And I roll this all in with the atmosphere of hate that the tea party and media stir up constantly just for the purpose of political victory.

(4,996 posts)I don't believe that you can plead guilty if you face the death penalty. The death penalty was probably taken off the table in exchange for a guilty plea.

(26,343 posts)What they don't seem to grasp is the chilling effect the murder had on the community. Black people looking over their shoulder, parents worried about their kids or wives worried about their husbands. That's why this kind of thing is terrorism and should be treated as such (I prefer hate crime of the overused terrorism. But that's what it is).
